The world is FILLED with out of work lawyers right now.
Anybody have any suggestions? I've searched and I basically see the same names mentioned over and over again -- that one woman (forget her name) who is a bulldog in the courtroom, and a few others. But all have $5000+ retainer fees.

She does not work -- her mom suffered a stroke so she spends much of her time at the nursing home with her.

Good question. For 16 years he has done very little. He's a millionaire, living in Vegas who recently moved to Austin. Was in People magazine as a "top bachelor" and on various TV shows -- and never made one mention of his son. Now all a sudden he wants custody. Honestly I had no problem with the kid moving to Austin -- I feel there are a helluva lot more opportunities for him out there than there are here. But I don't like the hypocrisy involved in this case -- saying he wants him because of his mom's drug use, yet he uses himself. But, if he passes the hair sample test, all the power to him
He's a millionaire, and you don't want to spend $5k for a retainer. You can't win. Sorry.
Just hope to try and have a part of the kid's life. Y'all had 16 years, let him enter manhood with his millionaire father living in one of the mot happening cities in the country.
I'm not at all trying to be an arse, but it sounds like he is better off. Though I think it's shite IF a mother looses a teenager over pot in this day and age when it's a stone's throw from being legal.
Just that the kid seems like he never got to have time with his real dad, and now his real dad wants to make amends. If this was really you or your wife's top concern you would mortgage the house for a top lawyer and she would have quit smoking to pass a drug test.
I hate to hear things like this, but this revelation is a lot different that the hopeless heroin junkie you painted the birth father as earlier in the thread.
A heroin junkie who kept his money vs a Pot head who sees $5k as an insurmountable number. Think about that.

tell her to get a part-time job so she still has time to see her mom
find an attorney that will take a lower retainer and front it for her, then as she gets pay checks from the part time job, you put that many into your account
any fees that go over the retainer, you use money from the part-time job to pay
Sorry that her mom suffered from a stroke, but if her child is a priority then she will take the necessary steps to retain custody
and the first step is to get an attorney

If he is indeed a millionaire (and has income) and she does not work, then the child support payments should be substantial enough to cover the cost of an attorney. Something isn't adding up. Why is she broke?

Yet he passed the drug test and your wife didn't.

If you post a pic of your wife we could possibly determine her street value... other than that you're in the wrong place.

I'm just not buying that a broke single mom (now married) wouldn't go after a millionaire father for child support. Not buying it for one second. This is a huge hole in this story. There should be a judgment with a child support order in place based on the mother and fathers incomes. I'm having a hard time believing that she just passed on all the potential paychecks from his dad for all these years. Su-um fishy. I also have a hard time believing that a mother with custody for 16 years had her son taken from her for smoking weed. Just sayin

Ronald, you should know a couple of things:
1) She will lose this case if you don't change something. He has money and lawyers. The law is how we resolve disputes in civil society. Y'all can either make some sacrifices and find a way to come up with the cash or you can crack open the Civil Code and try to talk about the Bergeron standard on your own in court. *
LA Civil Code
2) If I'm 16 years old and my choices are A) pothead brokeass mom and step-dad who can't be bothered to throw me some support versus B) millionaire cool dad in Austin who used to party, I am gone. Poor kid is probably ready to get out of there.
3) You should send the real dad to the OT. He sounds awesome.
4) You are either a troll or the most uncommonly well-lettered cretin to ever grace this site. I have seen nary a glaring solecism from you, which is hella suspicious, to say the least. If you are really the character you purport to be, I want to thank you for your decent spelling. You are the dumbass we need here, but not the dumbass we deserve.
