ST. JOSEPH, Mich. — A woman and her boyfriend were deployed with the U.S. Army in South Korea when they conspired via Snapchat to kill her husband so she could claim the life insurance money, police in Michigan said.

quote:

Authorities say the 23-year-old Hassel was ambushed while visiting his family in St. Joseph Township. He died of multiple gunshot wounds, including one to the head, according to the autopsy report.

All three were soldiers stationed at Fort Stewart in Georgia.
Here's the part that confuses me.
quote:

Kemia Hassel told police in a signed statement that she spent months planning how to kill her husband so she could continue her romantic relationship with Cuellar, Township Police Officer Mike Lanier testified Wednesday.
quote:

Both have pleaded not guilty in the Dec. 31 killing of U.S. Army Sgt. Tyrone Hassel III. Cuellar was also charged with a felony firearms count.

Well break it down for me, professor. I was under the impression that you don't have to pull the trigger to be guilty of meticulously planning a murder that was then carried out.

In other words, murder one.

And what, precisely, do you think they would have gained by pleading guilty as charged?

It's often used as a stall tactic. There are times at arraignment when the prosecutor or defense attorney (or both) have not fully reviewed the case or evidence. During that time, evidence can be thoroughly reviewed, motions filed to suppress evidence, etc. A not guilty plea can later be changed easily. However, a guilty plea is usually much harder to withdraw legally.

Not getting executed?

Kaitlin Locke, Kemia Hassel's lawyer, said her client shouldn't be charged with first-degree murder because she didn't pull the trigger. But Schrock said there was enough evidence to prove she aided and abetted.

Because she pled not guilty to the most serious charge. This article was an update after the preliminary hearing. There might be a plea deal offered to avoid a trial before the date the court set for April 30.

In general from what I observed, it would be unusual to show up to the arraignment and plead guilty even if it was a much less serious case. Entering a not guilty plea at that time is just standard procedure.

This is the exact reason I have the Dark Web. You can't be too careful using technology today.

Maybe she planned it but someone else killed him before she could execute her plan.

Michigan doesn't have the death penalty. Even if it did, a negotiated plea for a life sentence generally occurs long after one pleads not guilty at arraignment.

Some of you watch too much TV.

She can try to argue that she was coerced into signing a confession I guess?

I don't know. Don't think it looks good.

Just because you planned on doing something doesn't mean you actually did it. I've spent months planning on getting my oil changed. Didn't do it. Not guilty.
