It absolutely is the airline's fault. They sold them tickets which should be attached to seats.
Look, overall I can't stand places that sell more seats than available. I get statistically it works for them, but it's a crappy business practice. So usually, I'd point to the shitty airline business practice.
But in this case, they specifically bought tickets that were not guaranteed a seat. Strange to me that it's even an option, but they took that chance by purchasing the cheaper option that isn't reserved. Reading how they felt they were discriminated against for being young and not having children, and how the airline should have asked others if they were willing to give up their seat for them....I just can't do anything but blame these entitled brats for their own situation.

Under no circumstance are you ever "guaranteed" a seat. Paying more just puts you lower on the totem pole for getting bumped. The practice of overbooking should be illegal.

Absolutely the practice of overbooking does suck and should be evaluated for if it should even be legal. Unfortunately though, it is legal and sometimes people get bumped. The bumped seat got reimbursed as it should've been and at least to this point, we don't know if the seats were booked on the same itinerary. Given the information we have, the fact is that one of the two had an available seat and chose not to take it due to personal preference.

Airlines oftentimes overbook, betting that some won't show up.
Cue Jerry Seinfeld rental car reservation clip.
The key part of a reservation is KEEPING a reservation.
Hell I can sell a ticket for a flight to timbuktoo in 2 months. What matters is my ability to fulfill it

My entire issue is based on the bolded assumption.
Solid post.

Well no shite, it wasn't the airline's fault.

That could end up being put in a seat next to a woman with a triple wide arse.

Felt like discrimination? What kind of beta victimhood is that? You made dumb decision.

And if they both had reserved seats and were unable to travel with their purchased seat, I would agree with you. These folks chose to forego security of their seat in exchange for a cheaper price and got burned. That's on them.
Thank you. It doesn't matter what anybody thinks of how it should be done, they knew the rules. Don't take chances if you're not prepared to deal with the possible negative outcome.

think we've reached critical limit for the use of FAFO.
It used to be some knucklehead broke into a house and got lit in the throat with a baseball bat, sure-fire FAFO. Now its devolved into a couple going cheap on airline tickets? Did they really frick Around here by doing something that is perfectly within the rules of that airline?
The FA was knowing the rules, taking the chance, then getting outraged at the very possible negative outcome. Yes, it's a far less drastic FAFO situation.

Maybe this is me being a baby back bitch, but flying is one area I'm not about to skimp on. I don't want to sit next to a stranger for 3+ hours. I don't want someone else to choose my seat. I don't want to have anxiety that I might get booted from the flight.
I guess I don't like traveling enough to not be comfortable for the entirety of my trip.
Never mind the people blasting you on this. You're 100% correct. When I'm travelling with my family, I pay extra to pick seats, and I pay to check bags. I'd rather pay the extra money than deal with the BS.

I'll never understand how people can think checking a bag when they don't have to is less stressful.

I said traveling with my family. I can pack for all of us for a weekend trip in one big, checked suitcase.
Also, have you seen the abuse of carry-ons? You've got these knob jobs that show up on the plane with their book bag the size of beach ball as their personal item and a giant duffel back strapped to their back as their carry-on.
Frick that. I'll keep checking my one big, checked suitcase, and maybe a regulation size checked bag that can fit under the seat.
Otherwise, if it's just me, I'm all for travelling light with an appropriate carry on.
Hope that helps you see where I'm coming from.

They chose not to select a specific seat. They didn't buy a ticket that didn't that didn't come with a guaranteed seat. This was just the airline over booking and they had the cheapest tickets so one got bumped.
They got bumped because they didn't check in.

Airline sucks in that they sold more seats than the plane they provided for said flight had, and plane changed after booking.
The couple had accepted that by not reserving seats, there could be consequences. They should have taken the flights they had for them- if you’re that cheap you likely need to be prepared for the circumstances that come with it.
