And if everyone reserved their seats? They still would have bumped some folks off.
If they had reserved their seats and were bumped, they would've been given a voucher for the next available flight. But they didn't reserve them so they had to pay for that seat that they didn't use.

Except this didn't happen at all. There was zero refund. One ticket was transferred at no cost, the couple forfeited the other and came out of pocket for a new ticket. It's all right there in the article.
Yea, I admittedly quit reading after I saw refund.

Ryanair is great. I've taken my family all over Europe with their cheap flights. This isnt some hack. You pay extra to pick a seat. Otherwise, find one open when the unassigned board last. If I remember, we had to reserve seats.when kids were little. Flights are short haul rarely more than 2 hrs. I've flown round trip for less than 50 euro on penny or 1€ fares plus tax/fees.
It was our go to ariline when we lived in Europe and largely the reason we were able to travel almost every weekend. My dad and I flew from Frankfurt to Shannon twice for a penny. Including taxes. Almost always made it on or close to on time. You have to know going in that when the ticket is 10 pounds and the same flight on Lufthansa or British Airways is 300 pounds you ain't buying the same thing. Many people don't understand that.
Ryanair did have some issues with maintenance while we lived in Europe. They were shut down for a while due to what regulators claimed was a complete lack of maintenance. The airline claimed it was a sham and as far as I know they did not have any accidents. Kind of made flying them a little more stressful though....

I don't want someone else to choose my seat. I don't want to have anxiety that I might get booted from the flight.
I never choose my seat and I've never been booted from a flight. You sound like a pussy.

Reserving seats only guarantee (maybe) that you sit together.
Apparently it means a little more for this airline

Did they pay for a seat?
Since when do people need to pay for seat insurance lol

The frick he will. If they’re cheapest again this couple will be right back.

And there was a seat available. They elected not to fill that seat. That's why they were given a voucher for one seat and not the other. There was a seat on that flight that went empty because they elected not to sit in it. This isn't that complicated.
Ticket + No available seat = refunded/rescheduled
Ticket + available seat + not using that seat due to personal preference = buy another seat.

I will save money by not picking a seat but always check in as soon a the window opens.
It's the people that check in day of at the counter that get screwed. I don't think I've ever checked in with a counter agent. If I'm doing luggage I'll door drop it. But i always have boarding pass before I'm at airport.

Ryan Air is a low budget airline. They were cheap dumbasses.

And if they both had reserved seats and were unable to travel with their purchased seat, I would agree with you. These folks chose to forego security of their seat in exchange for a cheaper price and got burned. That's on them.
That sidesteps the point I’m making. Sure, they didn’t reserve specific seats, which means they don’t have a right to specific seats. But if they reserved a joint itinerary, they should have the option to maintain a joint itinerary. I don’t see what having seat reservations would have to do with that.

I think we've reached critical limit for the use of FAFO.
It used to be some knucklehead broke into a house and got lit in the throat with a baseball bat, sure-fire FAFO. Now its devolved into a couple going cheap on airline tickets? Did they really frick Around here by doing something that is perfectly within the rules of that airline?

Says this:
And then this:
Having a meltdown is not being an adult.
quote:
“Me and my partner thought it’s not that much of a problem if we’re not sitting together for a two-hour flight, we’re adults here,”
And then this:
quote:
McCormick admitted that the two of them had a “meltdown” since they wanted to travel together
After going back and forth, we said we’re not going to take separate flights and be in separate countries for hours
Having a meltdown is not being an adult.

Having flown more last year than I ever had this is the biggest reason you take care of your business, especially picking your seats and reserving every fricking thing you can. The airlines give no fricks to help you ever.

Checked in yesterday and was assigned a seat. Didn't pay extra to choose since I will be sitting by a stranger anyway. The flight is an 1.5. No harm no foul if I get bumped I will go back home. If I get bumped on the return backup plan is to rent a car and spend a few days with my granddaughter on the way back home. Discount airline does not have multiple flights per day (twice a week only). If your going to be cheap you need a backup plan.

The couple elected to not reserve their seats. They rolled those dice.
They chose not to select a specific seat. They didn't buy a ticket that didn't that didn't come with a guaranteed seat. This was just the airline over booking and they had the cheapest tickets so one got bumped.
