There's no indication that the square sides are half of the sides of the triangle.

Why is the length of 5 almost half the length of 10?

I have had no reason to use sin, cos, tan since....well, trig. So that information left my brain.
But I did use common sense to solve it.
Area of the small triangles plus the area of the square = area of the big triangle. One equation to fill in your x's and done.
2.5x + x^2 + 10x = 50 + 12.5x + 0.5x^2
x^2 = 100

Whats the fricking answer? Does anybody know?
I don't want my lady to be smarter than me
Edit: So it's 100? without using formulas and greek letters?

the best math mind I’ve ever known was in a socially retarded, off-putting geek who could not spell, wrote like a moron, and tried to kill himself.
I don’t think he ended up reproducing.

Several mathy dudes have come up with the same answer.

You think knowing this is gonna put you over the top?

As long as she knows the difference between a teaspoon and tablespoon I'm alright.

It was 9th grade for us. I remember specifically that there was a Side Angle Side calculation method. So of course we called it an Angle Side Side method which is just as valid.
But yeah, I can't do that anymore. No reason to. Hell, the 4 semesters of calculus have been of no real use.

Can you still diagram a sentence?

It took me way longer than I’d like to admit to remember how to do long division a few days ago
I have an engineering degree with a minor in math

The lack of a right angle symbol is killing me
Why? It's a square, so it has to be a right angle.

Nobody can solve that without making assumptions.
Tan (A) = 5/X
Tan (A) = 20/X
Two equations and two unknows.

It's been over 40 years since I took any geometry class. I knew I was never going to use it in my life and didn't really pay attention, other than to pass a simple test that week. I've never used any algebra/geometry since that time, and have forgotten 90% + of what I 'learned' at that time. Other than basic addition/subtraction/multiplication/division, none of it was necessary. On the other hand, my son is an engineer and can solve any chemical/calculus equations etc..., however he had to call me to change a tire on his car b/c he has ZERO common sense. I don't call him stupid b/c he doesn't know how to things in life that most people need to know. He was never interested in everyday life, he loved books and learning. He's smart in his own right but couldn't survive in the world w/o modernization. He's a whiz in the book world, but not so much in the layman's world.
