My fraternity brother moved to Summerlin a nice suburb of Vegas. Visited with him for a few days in April. Summerlin is nice and I could live there. Think I may get tired eventually of living in a desert

was really surprised to find that mountain range in the middle of nowhere.
Nevada has the most mountain ranges in the U.S.
and this is why I could absolutely live in LV. I don't gamble, I actually don't care for the city that much at all, but it is located among an outdoor playground with endless natural wonders within a relatively short drive.

No sir. The whole town is a facade. That's ok, that's just what it is. I did enjoy the fact that my sweat actually evaporates there.

I enjoyed my 15+ years or so in Vegas. Nothing really bad to say about it. Having a kid now in life we just decided to move some place with more land and raise her in a smaller community.
I will say having going back for the game, I don't miss the summer heat. Luckily we stayed with some friends that have a large pool and big backyard.
Also in the 4 years I've been gone, the city keeps getting bigger and bigger. What used to take 15-20 minutes to get to some places now takes 45.

If I was going to move out west, I think Salt Lake City would be my choice.
SLC is exponentially better than LV in almost every conceivable way.

I did for 2 years. Moved into new neighborhood south LV, when we moved out 2 years later we still didn’t know anyone in the neighborhood.
LV was too hot, big, crime increasing. I had enough night life living in NOLA.
Moved to Reno, totally different.
Four seasons (not harsh seasons), 15% humidity, no cock roaches, not many insects, forest covered Mts, snow sking 12.5 miles from my house, hiking trails everywhere, Lake Tahoe 20 miles from house.
Lake Tahoe is beautiful but you don’t see people in the water except on certain beaches and only in about 2 feet of water.
Reno is not that big. But it’s growing because of the industrial park (Tesla, Walmart, Chewy….).

You really have to pay out the arse to have a neighborhood that won't go to shite. My parents had a spot off of Rancho and Craig thst was nice once upon a time. If we hadn't left they certainly would have needed to move at least once to avoid thr bad elements

the locals don't live on the strip
they have suburbs just like every other city

My first house was Tenya and Vegas area, 20 years ago it was great no way I would raise my kid in that area now. Crazy how much some areas change.
When we left we were living in Southern Highlands, the price the same house is going for 4 years later is nuts. Yeah, nice areas are crazy expensive now.

My brother lives off of Russell. Got to love the $300k home developments that are just for rent

I lived in Vegas for two years and absolutely hated it
The strip is cool for the first couple of weeks but outside of the strip, Vegas is a total shithole and was a very unsafe place to live. I could not wait to get the frick out of that place.
Now, visiting Vegas is awesome but living there fricking sucked

Could definitely live in Summerlin, 5 minutes from Red Rocks hiking. Lots of outdoor activities and proximity to everything out west. Summer would still suck but at least there is stuff to do outside. Neven even have to go to the Strip unless you want to, but it's there if you need it and for the restaurants.

No, too big. Too busy. Get's too hot in the summer.
I can see why people do if they like the excitement, or have a good job there. I'm sure it's great when it's not summer. And I'm sure you get used to the heat to some degree. But not on me / my wife's list of places to live while she's a travel nurse starting here in a couple of years.

quote:Camped near Ely, Nv. a couple of weeks ago. On my way to Great Basin NP. (Wheeler Peak there is at 13,000 feet). Campsite was in the Humbolt Natl Forest, 7000 feet. Nothing but piney woods, far from being a desert.
Nevada has the most mountain ranges in the U.S.
Wanted to camp near Ely as it has the meteorlogical status of having some of the biggest temp swings of any town/city in the lower 48. It was cool at night for sure for August.

Hard pass. I'm with the poster who wanted green space, water and beaches, etc. Basically the opposite of Vegas.
I can visit for 3-4 days but then I want to get the hell out. And winters there suck.
