Define "land".

I am obviously ignorant on flying/landing aircraft, but it seems like that shite is so automated these days that any relatively intelligent person should have a pretty good shot if they had the ground crew in their ear talking them through things. Now, if you're up there with no outside help? I'd say very few could do that successfully.

Yeah, taking the yoke and trading speed for altitude can't be easy for a first timer.

Very unlikely.

I would need a really, really long runway on a straight ahead position and a "wingman" pilot flying the same type of aircraft right behind me telling me exactly what to do as far as the controls, guages, etc.

I'd at least try to land it if no one with experience was available.

I know the landing isn't automated. But what chances do you give a normal, average dude to land a plane with the availability of the ground crew coaching him through it?

Most have autopilot down to the ground these days. So probably.

What would be easier to land for someone that knew basically nothing about flying to land with just a pilot in their ear a single engine gen aviation plane or a commercial jet? I always assumed it would be the single-engine.

If you could contact someone on the ground and follow directions, I would think many people could. If you are completely on your own, then it is highly unlikely.

When I was getting engine run qualified for C-130s, we would practice on the flight simulator. After everyone was done, the instructor let us see if we could take off and land on our own. I overshot the runway by a mile and landed it in a field somewhere. According to the computer people would have survived but the plane would have been a loss.

No, because my phone would be on airplane mode and therefore I wouldn't be able to watch a YouTube video on how to land a commercial airplane successfully.

With help of ATC yes, but I’ve flown air craft. It also depends somewhat on which commercial aircraft.

I know many of them practically fly themselves to a point now a days.

I’d try to pull a barrel roll like Beebo Russell. RIP sky king.
