I just don't see how it can compare to the real thing. Yes, it may very well get you to where you need to be but it's not the real thing.

Not any time soon. People will always innately desire the real thing. Science will constantly have to push the envelope in order to more closely replicate "the real thing" until they get to the point that the differences between real and fake are so subtle so as to render making fake ones unnecessary.
