A black male, 27, in Leon County, with a history of congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, and morbid obesity went to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare emergency room for about one week history of cough and shortness of breath. He reportedly had been in contact with his mother in South Florida who was COVID-19 positive. A chest x-ray suggested pneumonia. He went into acute respiratory arrest in the emergency room and died April 16. The swabs eventually came back COVID-19 positive. Contributing factors: history of congestive heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, and morbid obesity

Sounds like a lifetime of Medicaid expenditures we no longer have to pay for

I cannot believe we are shutting down everything for this disease.

Of the 25, 14 had either diabetes or obesity. Additional 5 had kidney problems or asthma. One had HIV. So 5 people under 40 in Florida have died of this disease that didn’t have MAJOR health problems. 5

Well, to be fair
1. As of may 6. That’s over two months ago, with numbers climbing like crazy in Florida.
2. People over 40 years of age have value

What about all the people in financial ruin over the absurd reaction to this disease? They have value too, yes?

These deaths are sad and nothing to make light of. But to say that Covid is what killed these people is quite a stretch.

Who said they didn’t?
But that’s a false choice.
For instance, do You think the airline/hospitality/entertainment industries are going to be killing it with this virus running wild, regardless of government lockdowns?
Of course not. Quickest way to fix the economy has always been to address public health first. You can’t will it away

The counterpoint is that public health is not materially different than it was prior to COV and the fear has been irrationally played up.
That’s probably too far on the other end of the continuum but a defensible position.

Only because we failed to implement a national testing/ tracing system and we didn’t adaquetly suppress community spread before lifting lockdowns.
Look to Europe and Oceania for how this could have been done better in the US.

What needs to be done is that EBT food purcahses can only be used for approved healthy, low calorie foods.
The health care costs and Medicaid costs and the perceived inequity, racial healthcare can all be solved.

No it isn't. People die every day from disease. We don't shut the world down for it. Why is this one so special that it's required this reaction?
Posted on 7/18/20 at 8:54 am to LNCHBOX
No, absolutely. There is nothing unique or unusual about this situation.
It would totally be better if we just ignored it and went about our normal routines.

I guarantee you more young people will have died from suicide as a result of depression brought on by the pandemic than will have died from the disease itself. It's not a false choice. People who wind up financially ruined are at greater risk to take their own lives, to become alcoholics, or to become serial abusers of their spouses and children.

Your sarcasm is noted. There is a vast middle ground between "do nothing" (which I didn't say btw) and what we've done.

What about the one that died in a motorcycle wreck. He had tested + previously. They weren't sure if the Kung Flu caused the wreck.

1. Absolutely. I’d like to see the updated numbers.
2. I never said they didn’t. It’s just wild that younger people are being so tenaciously shamed for not being afraid of this virus when the statistical danger to them is borderline non-existent.
And yes, I understand the danger of young people giving it to at risk people, but those at risk need to protect themselves.
