Is mass testing really helping the spread of the virus?
If you are sick, just assume you have COVID-19. Stay home and recover. If you can't breathe, go to the hospital.
Encouraging people with the virus to get out and about is dumb. They stop at various locations and spread it while going to get their pointless test.

I think what mass testing accomplishes is the tracking down of contacts of people who are sick, and testing them before they are symptomatic.

The mass testing is just fuel for the media to continue their fear mongering and tank our nation's economy.

Just quarantine and take tylenol etc if you're healthy and symptoms don't get worse.

The problem is that the risk of ARDS is a bitch.
You can literally go from being a little under the weather to suddenly passing out because you can’t get enough air within 24H.
There are (rare) reports of people being found in their homes dead of this because they weren’t found in the passed out gasping for air phase.

Following your logic would require hospitalizing all positive cases.

Which is why we should all be doing our part to contain this thing.
But we can't be inconvenienced for the health of our neighbors.

The fact that there are people out there who think this way boggles the mind.

It shouldn't anymore. It's a massive portion of this country unfortunately.

I’d agree with you but Senate Dems are clearly aligned with that idea.

Not in the slightest.
I was countering your assertion dismissing the tests, just go home.
There is value in knowing if you are positive, if only to know you need to rush to the doc at the first sign of respiratory collapse rather than just toughing it out and so the ER knows they are dealing with a COVID-19 ARDS case out of the gate as opposed to wasting time and resources diagnosing you.

75 million+ in the workforce being “inconvenienced” for a minimum of 45 days while losing everything in the process is more like it.

Being inconvenienced is a bit different than the fear of the whole country losing their jobs

My gut is the people who are saying this is no big deal economically are either “essential” or government employees.
Neither will like being furloughed or laid off when they can’t pay the bills either.

You do understand that mass testing will allow for a better understanding of what is actually going on?
SK is currently leading the world in testing and modeling estimates that SK has identified about 88% of their total cases.
While Indonesia is estimated to have only identified about 3% of their cases.
Over the next couple of weeks, as 100,000s of test are preformed per day, confidence will grow in estimates of how many cases are actually in the US and what the cCFR is for the US.

Hopefully it's the start of a trend improvement, but Italy posted a lower number of new deaths vs prior day for the first time in about week. Just trying to find something positive...
Edit: As did Spain, hopefully it's a real improvement and not something funky in the numbers.

Not replying directly to you. Just jumping in here to post this chart I made comparing Italy and Louisiana and the date of control measures taken.
Day 1 for Italy was February 15th
and Day 1 for Louisiana was March 9th.
(Day one is the day of the first official reported case)
LA is currently on day 14.
Italy is currently on day 36.
The control measures taken by both Italy and Louisiana are circled.
The population of Italy is 60.4 million.
The population of LA is 4.6 million
Italy is currently on day 36 with 53,578 total cases. 6,557 of those cases were new/reported today.
The total deaths in Italy between day 1 and day 36/today is 5,476.
1,444 of those deaths occurred today.
In my chart I forgot to include a control measure taken by Italy- that of shutting down carnival on February 21st, the Friday before Fat Tuesday. This measure was taken on Italy’s day 11.
At times I think we’re fine because we shut the entire state down sooner than Italy shut their country down. Then I think, but they’re an entire nation and we’re just a measly state. Then I say yeh but they’re old and they smoke. Then I say yeh but we have a lot smokers too and a lot type 2 diabetes. Then I say but we’re a prayerful faithful people. Then I say, but so is Italy......
So I go back and forth. Just wanted to share the chart.

At a certain point the virus run out of easy targets. Hope they’re getting close to that in Italy.
Posted on 3/22/20 at 9:48 pm to berrycajun
Bro Louisiana is not Italy. Italy has 60 million people living on top of each other in an area about twice the size of Louisiana. It’s a 2nd tier European economy. An area like that is a lot more prone to getting obliterated by a bad virus like this.

Italy's healthcare system is also garbage compared to the US. They are basically just letting people die over there and hoping the virus goes away soon.
