I understand the concern of pushing the hospitals beyond capacity, but at what cost are we willing to do that? Are hospitals going to expand their critical care units after all of this? I doubt it.

The whole “virus now, economy later” logic seems to be what everyone is going with right now.

Even Trump said it.

Maybe they are right and we are wrong, but man, it seems like a huge gamble to take. I hope they are right though. I really do.

The more data that comes in, the more it seems like this didn’t deserve the reaction it has caused.

Is no one looking at the numbers?

I have no way to gauge what hospitals and such are saying via third parties, but if that stuff is generally accurate then I think it's pretty unquestionable that this is serious and required serious measures. If we're already strained with PPE and ICU beds and whatever then I imagine that would be much worse if the numbers were a magnitude worse.

Hopefully they're wrong, and the virus turns out to not really be shite. Unfortunately itll be next year before we actually know.

I don’t want economies to crash and they were wrong.

That’s why I hope they are right.

Reality is you'll never get a clear answer. Hopefully the numbers will favor one side (the naysayers) and the on the ground stories will favor the other and you'll just have to decide what you think.

I've got infection control specialists/public health people in my family so every time something happened in Africa or China I heard about. I know people don't want to hear it because of the economic damage, but I think this is an experience the country probably needed if it wants any chance to avoid a genuine catastrophe in the future.

This is the first real pandemic in American modernity. Honestly this is hopefully the closest we'll have to a true societal breakdown/collapse in our lifetimes, and there will be enormously valuable lessons for those who want to learn from this saga.

The fricking common cold is a “real” pandemic. As is the flu. As was Ebola. As was swine. And they’re all still out there. Ffs. Be less dramatic when trying to be clever. It’ll be more genuine.

The damage has already been done. We’ve lowered the bar. You trust the media and the experts to responsibly report the next “pandemic”?

Ignore the person and not the post. Solid response when you’ve been called out as a fool.

American pandemic is a whole new word you just created.

Look up oxymoron and that’s what an “American pandemic” is.

It's a term or a phrase, actually

But I'll definitely get my epidemiology input from this guy

if they are wrong and they crush the economy, yeah, nobody will take them seriously next time

if they are wrong, and we don't see real numbers, it will unfortunately turn into a "boy who cried wolf" situation and will be disastrous if/when a real one hits
