At a time when everyone needs better information, from disease modelers and governments to people quarantined or just social distancing, we lack reliable evidence on how many people have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 or who continue to become infected. Better information is needed to guide decisions and actions of monumental significance and to monitor their impact.
quote:
That huge range markedly affects how severe the pandemic is and what should be done. A population-wide case fatality rate of 0.05% is lower than seasonal influenza. If that is the true rate, locking down the world with potentially tremendous social and financial consequences may be totally irrational. It’s like an elephant being attacked by a house cat. Frustrated and trying to avoid the cat, the elephant accidentally jumps off a cliff and dies.

Counter point from Stat News. He is getting considerably blowback from peers, esp for not discussing the SK data that contains testing of nearly 1 in every 200 citizens and a nCFR of 1%.

Damn, imagine a scenario where it’s such a dire situation that the government tells students, “you know what, you’re probably good enough. Come on over and save these peoples’ lives”.

Can further confirm that Touro is not even using their ICU to house the corona patients, as that would be "ignorant to have contagious people around the most severely sick".
They are using a completely separate ward of the hospital.

Pretty sure Remdesivir is Tamiflu or very similar
Remdesivir was an antiviral created for Ebola. It wasn’t very effective for Ebola. It showed promise in the first case of COVID in Washington but the patient was a healthy 30 year old. They have alot to prove with further testing. The good news is we know it’s safe.
I’m more excited about chloroquine. It’s an old drug. Cheap and prevalent.

NYC is most likely going to issue a shelter in place order.

The City That Never Sleeps could be shutting down in 48 hours.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Tuesday that he was considering whether to impose a shelter in place order which would essentially require residents to stay in their homes and keep outside social contact to a minimum to slow the spread of the coronavirus in the nation's largest city

It was also used fairly extensively in China. It has shown enough promise that they are attempting to patent it for treating COVID-19 even though Gilead owns the rights to it. They claim to have also begun manufacturing it.
remdesivir

In America most med students on clinical rotations have been sent home for online learning. Would have to get insanely bad for that to happen here.

My 70yo parents are both on Hydroxychloroquine 200 mg 2x a day for Rheumatoid Arthritis maintenance. Is there any indication that it may have any kind of preventative effect for this virus? Just curious i really worry about them, their health is total shite.

I've seen a couple of sources saying that it has been shown effective as a prophylactic, yes.

Per The Advocate, Baton Rouge General tested 400 patients for Covid-19 in first two days of operation. Will be interesting to see data.

“Was just on television discussing HCQ, first well controlled study against COVID-19.
600 mg HCQ per day after 6 days, 90% of patients tested COVID-19 negative. 96% of control group tested positive after 6 days.

If current percentages are a good indicator, we could expect roughly 149 positives from that.

This seems almost too good to be true. But man I hope this leads to a big breakthrough.

Can anyone explain how an immunosuppressive drug helps fight a virus? It's counterintuitive as I think about it....

I saw this earlier when someone mentioned Remdesivir. This is some preprint study done on a group of 12 Covid-19 patients. I know it's really small and other groups have had some promising data on it. My question for the medical people in here is do you guys have any reservations with something like this being rushed out so fast about the safety of it? What kind of consequences could something like elevated liver enzymes that they're observing have on someone? Is this a totally new medicine?
Also, this was only given to 3 patients, so I'm not sure why this was even put out. I guess it could be good for other researchers to at least be aware that it's been observed? Idk, but I'm glad others are having some success with it and hopefully someone can figure it out to start work on something that's safe and can give patients some sort of hope for a little relief.

Early Results Dampen Outlook for Experimental COVID-19 Treatment

Preliminary problems
A paper describing the first 12 patients with COVID-19 in the U.S. started circulating ahead of an official peer review, and it doesn't look great for remdesivir. While the paper didn't have anything negative to say about efficacy, there were some unsettling safety signals
quote:
All three patients treated with remdesivir recovered, but they also reported significant gastrointestinal symptoms. Investigators also noticed elevated liver enzyme levels in their blood samples.
Given the lack of available virus-attacking treatments for COVID-19, some gastrointestinal discomfort isn't such a big deal, but elevated liver enzymes could nail remdesivir's coffin shut.

Posting again about this, I am on Humira. Am I fricked?

I've read that it has direct antiviral effects. Not sure what is the exact mechanism of action.

Jefferson Davis Parish with nighttime curfew. Not sure what to make of that.
“Parish Wide Curfew will begin on Wednesday March 18, 2020 at 11:00 p.m., in accordance with the Louisiana Revised Statute 29:724. The curfew will be in effect from 11:00 p.m. thru 5:00 a.m. until further notice. Parish wide curfew excludes persons traveling to or from work or an emergency. “

Hearing some really bad news about school closures. Don’t even want to repeat it yet although the source was bonafide and certain. I just want it to be wrong.
