A important thing to note is something I posted a page or two back. Veneto has 151 cases and they said that 95 of them are asymptomatic.
Good that it's apparently causing mild illness but not good for controlling the spread if people don't even realize they're infected.

That’s because the governor of Veneto tested the entire town wether people had symptoms or not, so that will give us an accurate picture of how many asymptomatic cases there are.
It will be interesting to follow that up

And for some stock market/economy outlook:

and I saw this on twitter from the NYT:

quote:
Lee says the fear about the uncertain impact of the virus is a credible one but believes that investors may be overreacting to a great extent. “Because of the idiosyncratic nature of a potential pandemic, it is really difficult to know when it is priced in," he said.
He makes the case that “markets are bottoming this week” even as financial markets head into a weekend where uncertainties could deliver a fresh wallop to confidence. He is forecasting a so-called V-shaped, or sharp, recovery for the market.
He also noted that his optimistic forecast could be impeded by further negative reports of the viral outbreak, but said that he wouldn’t be surprised if the government kicks in surprise plans to help stance the bleeding in markets. Those might include:
- A health-care action plan by the U.S.
- An announcement of financial support by the Treasury Department
- Other fiscal stimulus packages
- An emergency interest-rate cut by the Fed

I wonder why they only went back 10 years

That is over.
The goal now should be to test as many people as possible and obtain accurate data regarding the true mortality rate of this virus.

guess how many the CDC tested in the past 2 days....

I would imagine its going to be quite a shock to the market when we actually start testing and there are cases everywhere. It's going to seem like the virus is out of control when in reality we just haven't been testing like these other countries.

Hey we did test and clear that one dude who then proceeded to cough all over his daughter on national TV.

This administration needs to clean out the CDC and restart it.
What have they been doing since this event started?

I think they were telling everyone to worry about the flu and to wash their hands.

They have a big enough budget to focus on two things at once.

What would a vaccine be like for this?
Would it be combined with the flu shot? Would it be different every year? Some years work better than others?

There are multiple viruses that we don’t need vaccines for.
If we get accurate infection rate and mortality rate numbers and it shows they are negligible, a vaccine would be a waste.
Otherwise, who knows.

By my rough calculation, this virus has wiped out nearly $5.25T in US stock market capitalization in less than 10 days.
There is no possible way this will be that costly.

So CDC is hoping that state and local heath departments will have ability to test by end of next week. We are going to go from 1 community based infection to several hundred overnight, I’m betting. We will see reports of like 2-5 more community based cases over the next week, then the week after in a 48 hour span it will go from like 5 to 500.

Yes, I did suspect some decrease due to China’s factories being down, but if that damn CDC c u n t wouldn’t have called into a news show to spread fear, I don’t believe it would have been anywhere near this point.

Yeah, she definitely attention whored herself into widespread panic but the financial problems would probably still be severe. Not as severe but folks are worried and rightly so. She just incited panic when worry was enough. I bet her supervisors were pissed.

Paraphrasing, and updating, J Paul Getty, a trillion dollars isn't worth what it used to be. For example, in 1980 the entire US market cap was about $1.3 trillion, and US GDP was about $2.9 trillion.

With a novel virus I don't think it was an over reaction. China needed to feel pressure to act appropriately after all their failures with SARS. Luckily SARS was contained and I think that's what they were hoping for here, it just failed.
The stock market was due for a correction. This is the longest bull market in history. If it wasn't corona it would have been something else.
