I know everyone thinks China is lying, but stories like this aren't backed up by the data coming out of any country anywhere. This is nearly impossible to believe.

China’s numbers aren’t accurate because they are a poorly run communist country. There isn’t some conspiracy. WHO is on the ground, we have intelligence. We would know if hundreds of thousands of people were dying. Hell, Honkus was just in Wuhan and his family is still close by. He said nothing to support any of this.

Think about all the other nonsense on Twitter that is posted daily. This is just more of the same.

Interesting read from Zero Hedge regarding that question.

LINK

It goes into saying that SARS (another coronavirus) was effective in binding to the ACE2 enzyme. Just so happens that the Asians have higher concentrations of that enzyme. Give the article a read, it's not long. There is some speculation that re-infections can occur and cause myocardial issues, but I'm just taking that as speculation.

I want to make sure you are saying what it seems you are saying.

You believe the numbers China is putting out?

My Gawd

What I find even more cute is you think your government would give the heads up on mass casualties. That is the most beautiful thing and most flattering compliment I've ever heard for a fricked up government.

Who exactly would come out and tell us? Trump? Pompeo? Fox news? I'm assuming you are talking about satellites here also. How will satellites show anything? Can they see through buildings? Millions of people in their apartments dying? Can they see the bodies dumped in a crematorium? Nope. They aren't omnipresent for fricks sake.

Better question - what are you doing about it? Conservative blokes like us should be waiting around for the government to help us, right?

I am doing exactly what the rest of this board is doing to solve the problem. You attack me because you feel that I am a conservative. Do you think that being a commie will protect you? I am still trying to find a cure for the common cold. Could you give us advice?

That Zero Hedge article is EXTREME speculation. It’s what someone who has no background in science but reads article summaries would write. They are piecing together text messages from family members of doctors, scientific article summaries, and rumor.

It's basic social science that, even under the best of conditions, quantitative data captured during the fog of war, disease, or any other serious situation is questionable at best. That's one of the main reasons why qualitative data is just as important as quantitative data.

But quantitative data absolutely must be viewed upon with suspicion anytime you're dealing with a highly bureaucratic society with an autocratic ruler. Due to the courageous work of journalists from Caixin, the New York Times, and a variety of other outlets, we know for a fact that China is applying tests in a very limited fashion, as well as moving large number of sick people to crowded facilities where they die before they can ever be diagnosed or treated. We also know that China is using extremely questionable methods of choosing who ends up in those facilities. Even worse, there is an extreme shortage of healthy physicians and nurses, especially in Hubei province, and they're being abused in a reckless fashion.

As for those who say that China's numbers aren't being replicated in other countries, that's hardly a surprise. China has one of the least healthy societies in the world, especially outside of Beijing and Shanghai. I've lived in China and can tell you firsthand that pollution levels are far worse than any city outside of India. If the level of cancer was ever accurately reported, it would be scandalous. However, the Chinese government actually benefits from having limited medical infrastructure; they regularly under-report certain causes of death, particularly in poor areas, because they simply don't have the medical professionals or facilities for diagnosis. Again, this is why any social science department or institute worth its salt employs a team of qualitative researchers to complement the quantitative data that may or may not be deeply flawed.

Moreover, the individuals who are best equipped to provide us with reliable data all work within Chinese universities that do not allow their researchers to study "sensitive topics." Any researcher who dares to gather data contrary to the official statistics that, quite frankly, are 30% based in reality, 20% based in conjecture, and 50% based on keeping one's job would be immediately fired and potentially disappeared.

Under such conditions, we'll never know the true impact of this disease within China. And - similar to our projections of the deaths under Mao's cultural revolution - we'll only be able to propose educated guesses many years into the future.

I dont think its that crazy. I have a friend of a friend whose brother and sister in law died. It's really not crazy to think a family who lives or associates with each other will all get sick and with how understaffed and underresourced the epicenter is, they could all die.

I agree. I was just giving an example of how someone could engineer a virus to effect a certain population, in this case ethnicity, more than another population.

In the US the non infected will be far more deadly than the sick when they see advantage to it. The Chinese public doesn’t have guns.

Not attacking you at all. Just pointing out if we're going to be upset with our government’s response, we should also consider what we're doing about it individually.

That’s pretty awesome.

The case curve is still flattening out and that’s 3 days in a row the growth factor has been under one.

Hopefully the trend continues.
