Won't the virus somewhat stop once the weather gets hot like the flu?
Supposedly the virus doesn’t like warm weather or sunshine. Scientists are hopeful this will slow down the spread once it starts warming up.
I even saw a report that they don’t expect much impact in Australia because it is currently summer there. Only time will tell.

The highest COV-19 infection rate in the world is on that cruise ship in Yocohama Bay.
I was wrong several pages back: passengers are allowed out of their cages/rooms IF they wills stay two meters from any other human beings.
Time has numbers and a time line for that ship. Also there's the pesky bit that they haven't tested everybody, just the elderly and people with interiour rooms. And one of their crew is confirmed sick.

Too bad China is always cloudy with pollution air.

Amazing that this all came from a bat

There's also the fact that China has done unprecedented lockdowns/quarantines, is welding people in their apartments, and essentially shutting down everything in huge regions for weeks. The way China is acting tells me that this is either more deadly than the yearly flu, more contagious than the yearly flu, or probably both.

Al Jazeera has a good summary link
It has a list of all those removed from their jobs, as well as a comparison with those removed back in SARS time.
It may be significant that CT scans are being used as confirming diagnoses, since there's no way that PCR tests could be run on that many potential patients.
Add this to the uncertainty that the numbers approach anything accurate.........

Meanwhile, Hubei's health commission said in a statement that it had begun including infections diagnosed through new clinical methods and had revised its old data and suspected cases. The latest death toll included more than 100 clinically diagnosed cases.
State media said last week that Hubei would start recognising computerised tomography (CT) scan results as confirmation of infections, allowing hospitals to isolate patients more quickly.
Total cases in the province have now reached 48,206, the commission data showed, pushing the total number nationwide to nearly 60,000.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Bin Song, director of the radiology department at Chengdu's Huaxi Hospital, said he has received patients with "false negative" diagnosis, including one woman, who tested negative four times.
"Her clinical features are very typical of the coronavirus infection. We didn't discharge her, because we still have enough beds and can't run the risk of letting her infect someone else. And on the fifth try, the result finally came back positive," he said.
He also pointed out that several "false negative" results might have been caused by the discrepancy in diagnostic kits being used.
"It's likely there are different levels of quality, resulting in the lack of accuracy of the test result in some instances," Bin said.
Add this to the uncertainty that the numbers approach anything accurate.........

Those claiming warmer weather may slow it:
There's no data to back that up at the moment.
Other corona-viruses have exhibited this, but this one not so much. Look at Singapore, for example.

That's the tendency for respiratory viruses. OTOH the 1918-19 flu came in two waves, both of them starting in the spring, sweeping the world during summer and peaking in the fall. When the swine flu was going around a few years ago I got it around September or early October. So while it's somewhat likely this will subside in warmer month's there's no guarantee.

I assumed the temperature claims were related to in vitro survival of the virus. That doesn't seem like it would be all that difficult to determine. Take samples of live virus, smear on a few plates and compare the viability over time in various conditions.

I think the biggest thing is that everybody gets exposed to it eventually. They either get sick or shake it off unnoticed. That takes about 6-8 moths worldwide for a typical flu virus where a lot of people have partial immunity from similar strains. A new virus like this, where no one has any natural immunity may take a lot longer.

FWIW, no one has argued the numbers out of China are very accurate. Hell, the damn CDC in the US is only 95% confident that the flu killed 26,000-52,000 people last year. The only point of contention in the thread has been whether there is some intentional, large scale cover up or not.

5,000 cases out of Hubei today

Serious/critical cases from 7k to 9.6k. I feel bad for those doctors and nurses. You work your asses of each day in the line of fire, only to see the problem get bigger.

Huge drop from yesterday, though, which makes me think yesterday was, in fact, a catch up day.

Sadly, we're now seeing a mass quarantine of 10,000 people in Vietnamese farming villages near Hanoi.
