Well it’s all relative, isn’t it? I think we can all agree on that.

No one wants to stay shut down forever just like no one ( or at least very few) want to return things back to normal too quickly.

It’s all about finding that tolerable balance.

We need to ensure that we have the right plan to re-open and the necessary tools to manage new outbreaks.

I’ve yet to hear anyone other than arm chair experts transparently lay out the plan for what we need to do to get to this point.

The President has put together a committee to lay that out. The Governor of Texas is laying a plan out on Friday.

The few people who say this, whether joking or not, don't realize that mouthbreathers take it seriously and that kind of shite will keep our businesses closed.

It isn't binary. Open things up with a lot of precaution taken.

If the choice is to extend this shelter in place for multiple months, or thin the herd, i chose thin the herd

If that makes me a "mouthbreather", so be it

No, those aren't the choices. Those were never the only 2 choices.

But for some reason politicians and the media are acting like those are the only two choices.

This is such a ridiculous thing to say, and demonstrates a complete disconnect from reality.

Media, sure. I haven't watched hardly any media coverage of this beyond the live pressers.

Politicians? I don't think so. I think many/most are formulating plans of how and when to re-open sooner rather than later.

The real question is whether to:

* Open everything immediately, see no real economic recovery, and watch our ICUs fill back up, or

* Stay locked down a couple more weeks to get the virus to a low enough point that people feel safe, we can test and trace and keep the virus under control, and we get a real economic recovery.

Despite the fact that Scruffy believes that I am "insane" for wanting the latter, the fact remains that I am a business owner currently shut down. I am still doing about half my normal business online, but I know my customers and know that they aren't willing to come into my business locations right now.

I mean, besides my three managers, I have 25 part-time employees, and 10 of them won't even come in to work now, when they wouldn't have to deal with any customers in person, and when they would just be in an office environment with two or three others with good social distancing. I couldn't actually open my business back up now if I wanted to, because I know of at least two more employees who wouldn't work, because they are too afraid of catching the virus.

South Korea had one of the world's biggest outbreaks early on, and they got it under control. Yesterday, they had only 27 new cases of COVID-19, after reporting 25 the day before.

We can also control this virus and live almost normal lives, but we need to get it down to a low level first.

I get it. But that isn't what I was saying earlier about mouthbreathers. Some people actually believe those are our only two choices and I think those people are the biggest road block to phasing in a re-opening.

So we need to be sure to tell people that social distancing and very strong precautions can be taken and still re-open businesses. Because otherwise they just hear Don Lemon say Republicans want everyone to die by re-opening the entire country just like it was before on Day 1.

Oh my god, here's an example of what I'm talking about in my last post.

OR BEHIND DOOR NUMBER 3!?!?!

We can have a hybrid model where we:
1. Re-open businesses (not concerts/sports/crowded venues and potentially capacity restrictions on some stuff)
2. Continue social distancing (6ft when possible)
3. Continue good hand/face hygiene and potentially mask wearing
4. Continue to isolate vulnerable
5. Continue to work from home when possible
6. Continue to ramp testing

I disagree with this. A couple more months is definitely too long. I don't really give a frick if some business can't make it a month without revenue despite getting relief from lower expenses. They were shaky as frick already.

Going to 2 or 3+ months with a massive decrease in revenue will be too much for even really solid small, local businesses and a good amount of larger ones too.

this is a critical point that isn't being made too often.

I'm not out of work right now because the government shut me down.

My business closed down way before any stay-at-home order because we were down by 50% - it was a no-brainer decision to suspend operations.

That wasn't the government. That wasn't hysteria or the media. That was the virus.

I know that there will be a certain percentage of the population that says "frick it" no matter what's going on, and there's another segment that can't wait to get back out there because of how long this lockdown has felt.

But there is another healthy percentage of people that slowed way down before any of this really got cranked up.

Then you still kill and crush major industries such as hospitality, restaurants, travel, etc etc

You have to open this up too if you want to make a meaningful difference

50-60% capacity for those things is status quo starting in a few weeks anyway for new orleans.
