I think if they don’t have insurance, the vehicle should be impounded. Sold at an auction, the money given to you.

If so, how does it make sense to only get the insurance for one month and cancel?

I believe vehicle registration in Louisiana is valid for two years, so getting insurance for one month and then canceling doesn’t impact you for another two years

I guess they just have a fake card that does enough to get by the police.

As someone pointed out it is far more likely they just paid the first month got the card and then didn't pay any further payments and had a card good for 6 months.

Why do insurance companies ask if there has been any gaps in coverage when you sign up? Is there some sort of "penalty" if you answer yes honestly?

The cop said "Well, I guess I can let that go" but I told him I had the Progressive app and had the updated card on there. He told me I needed to physically have it on me and I picked up my phone, opened the app, pulled up the ID and said "I do". He just looked at me and walked back to his car.

You're lucky you didn't get tased or shot

Proof of insurance is just showing the card. I had this happen years ago and got the call from their insurance that the driver’s policy was being reviewed and then a few hours later called to be told it wasn’t valid. I had uninsured on my policy that gave me a few thousand and I then went after the driver for the other amount of total damage. I got lucky because this happened when I was military and so was the other driver so I just forced the issue on his command and had the kid make payments each month to the amount he owed me.

I was in a four-car accident about 10 years ago and I learned a valuable lesson on all of this.

First, an illegal was responsible for the wreck. Rear ended a car really bad that cause a chain reaction at a stop light. Luckily, I was car 4 so I just had a dent.

Three of the drivers could get out the car. The person rear ended directly could not. Clearly hurt. Anyway, the illegal could speak english. She was on her phone. Didn't apologize, didn't ask if anyone needed help, etc. Just got on the phone and was telling whoever on a speaker she got in a wreck. The person on the other line flat out tells her "you are illegal and have no ID. Don't worry about it".

Cop shows up after about 30 minutes. Don't know why it took forever. Airline Highway in the middle of a nice day.

Cop asks for ID and Insurance. Illegal has none. Cop lets the illegal leave. UNREAL.

Naturally, everyone else was in shock. The person responsible literally got off scot free. Cop told us straight up: "Can't do anything with illegals. Judges don't care and the feds will make sure nothing happens" This was in 2013 when Odummy was POTUS.

We all learned a valuable lesson that day.

Keep voting Democrat!!

Yes. And, it doesn’t matter if you answer honestly. The systems know. They ALWAYS know.

And after the towing / repo / auction house scheisters get paid 1st, then the title loan companies get the rest, you’re still stuck with empty pockets.

This is state specific. In Louisiana you can’t even have UMPD if you have collision -it’s literally not allowed. In Texas you can have UMPD and it will actually pay for hit and run accidents. Every state is different so your blanket statement isn’t true.

My wreck was in California (multiple vehicle at a light). If there is no injuries or EMS dispatched cops don’t even do a police/accident report.

similar in TX, you don't even have to call the fuzz but they will issue a report if you request one, and your insurance company would greatly appreciate it if you did

This should be a jail time offense. If you don't have money to pay for your super basic insurance, you don't have money for a car that is safe enough not to have failures and hurt people. Take the bus.

I am not usually a big government guy and dont know if I would support this but I can envision a time where newer cars could be disabled due to lack of insurance. Sorta like how OnStar can disable a stolen car.

Lots of bad ways that could go but I could see it happening. If you use your car on a public road (who doesnt) and your insurance lapses your car wont start.

AGAIN I dont know if I would support such a law but it might get some of the uninsured off the roads.

Yep major cities in California have been doing that for more than 10 years now. With no injuries it’s a civil matter and they just let the insurance companies handle it. Small towns still show up though - but then they charge the at fault party for them responding.
