I am not a big fan of the police, but some of ther responses in this thread are ridiculous.

If you can't restrain an off duty firefighter long enough for backup to come then no you can not defend yourself, you should not be a cop and you damn sure shouldn't be allowed to carry a weapon.

Yeah, I'm all about exposing aggressive police action that crosses the boundaries of reasonableness under the circumstances. But can't do that in this case. The off-duty fireman was drunk, got into an altercation with a cabbie, resisted arrest, subdued the officer, and began pounding him in the face. I have to say I think the cop was within his rights to defend himself.
