I can't tell you how many times in my life I've had a dog run at me barking while I was jogging or walking the neighborhood. I've somehow managed to make it the last 40 something years.

Exactly what I was thinking. No way I would be that calm if I walked up on a cop right after he shot my dog. I would probably end up either thrown in jail for assault of an officer, or shot dead by that officer. probably the latter, but there wouldn't be one rational thought go through my head at that time.

Yep. What a terrible person.
This guy is supposed to be trained to make life or death decisions and use proper judgement. We can't even trust him to figure out if a small dog is a threat to his life. Just playing this scenario out in my head if it happened to me- no way I would not be arrested for reacting in some hysterical way

What's really unfortunate is that the silly 'black lives matter' movement is causing the media to miss the point completely. It's not that cops shoot too many blacks, it's that they are just nuts with guns playing army. They're beating up and killing blacks, whites, and cute little puppy dogs. They playing SWAT man with battering rams, flash bangs, armored personnel carriers, and m-16s to serve warrants for not violent offenders.

I do have a problem with cops instantly shooting dogs. Why not use the taser? Use your cop stick? I mean if it is a pittbull well then blow it's head off but damn some of these cops are just plain old pussies.

Before Katrina when I lived in Waveland, I went to a junkyard.
On the way out a male pit jumped and at me.
I yelled NO. He sat back down.
One of the employees asked how I kept the dog from attacking and I told him what I did.
He was shocked, that pit attacked about a dozen people. I guess I was lucky.

Meh. Many folks wilt under fire. Running is terrible - as is turning your back on a dog - keeping your eye on the dog and -slowly- introducing space and being either soothing or firm with the dog is 100% the right answer. Demonstrating fear, prey behavior or alarming, random, unpredictable actions in front of a dangerous dog that is already twitchy are just bad ideas.
Now, well trained dogs are going to do what they're trained to do, but nothing you're going to do will likely stop them - you have a fight on your hands.
But, your average "street tough" or junkyard dog is used to being firmly scolded by humans. Much better than running, screaming or immediately trying to fight the dog.
