It feels like our society is breaking down. Psychotic bums roaming the streets shitting and assaulting people with nowhere to put them. Trashiness celebrated. And more and more videos of cops all hopped up on roids and preworkout with hair triggers.

Exactly. 75% of cops look like the just got out of Parchman penitentiary. All covered in tattoos and roid damage to their face. They're not fit to be in society, let alone govern it.

75% of our citizenry looks pretty f’d up, too, though. When the societal average goes the direction of more trashy/violent/mentally ill, the pool of potential cops changes the same way. We act all shocked when there happens to be video. Idk what it will take for our culture to change to celebrating peacefulness, morals, and excellence over what we celebrate now.

I guess you didn't revisit that thread. The big bad boomer got himself charged and arrested. One of the charges was strangling a minor. None of the witnesses backed up your claims that the kid was pulling a stunt for social media.

Shitty cops are nothing new. They aren't unique to modern times. You can read historical accounts of shitty/dirty cops for the next several years and not run out of new material. The big difference between now and decades/generations past is that there is video, and that is a good thing. That means it is much easier to hold those shitty cops accountable. But, and this is a big but, we NEVER get an accurate accounting of what took place in a given encounter initially even with video. The video gets cut up, manipulated, and manufactured in effort to shape a narrative, and it is done from both directions. By the time the full video/story gets out the court of public opinion has already issued its verdict. Sometimes, outright denial follows viewing of an uncut video, as the recent suicide by cop case proves. The guy had a suicide note in his pocket, and was chambering a round when the police put him down. The family and some who latched onto that case still said the police slaughtered or executed him. So, even video released in quick order clearly showing what transpired can't save us.

I know shitty cops aren’t new, and neither is this crappy culture we have now. I’ve read accounts of the mean streets of NYC in the 70s, with dirty coos walking the streets full of gang members, druggies, and bums. But it seems things got better for a while and are now worse. Maybe it follows the economy, or other factors like political corruption. It seems we are in a bad phase and idk what can be done to make things better. I know i wouldn’t want to be a cop in today’s climate. But i also see why people don’t like them. There are good ones, but i think a “good” person with any other prospects is likely to find another career with the crappy conditions and low public support.

It doesn't help when the current laws incentivize corruption and bad behavior among cops. Everything from their unions, qualified immunity, and civil asset forfeiture should be abolished. The taxpayers shouldn't be footing the bill when they harm or kill someone without cause. Take every penny that they and their family have to pay off the judgement, and if that isn't enough, seize the retirement accounts of the cops on that force to pay the rest. Maybe then the blue wall of solidarity will come down.
