I've met a bunch of really nice ones.
Believe it or not, one of the nicest was O.J. Simpson. This was in the mid-1980's.

Met Eddie Robinson once. He was very nice, humble and soft spoken. Charles Philyaw who used to play for the Raiders in the 70’s and went to a couple Super Bowls used to come into a clothing store I worked at when I was younger. He wore a 22 neck 38 sleeve dress shirt and a 46x38 pant. He was huge and one of the friendliest people you would ever meet.
Me and one of my best friends had gone out one Saturday night in Shreveport after a Pirates game. They were the CFL team that was here for about four years or so. Met and hung out with Timm Rosenbach. He was a 1st rounder for the Cardinals out of Washington State and bounces over to play for the Hamilton Tigercats after not making a long stay in the NFL. There was a guy named Wally Zatylny with him. He was a receiver and had a fair amount of CFL records for Hamilton and another team. Anyways, Rosenbach was just about the nicest person I’ve met in my life. We took them to some bars and then gambling at the boats until about 5 am when we hurriedly made an order at Whataburger for 74 cheeseburgers and fries and then met their team bus at the Holiday Inn where they were leaving to go to the airport. I got on one bus and passed out burgers and fries to half the team and Zatylny passed them out on the other bus. He was cool as hell too. Always pulled for those guys after that.

Lee Gros was drafted by the Saints in the mid 70's, and bought a house in my neighborhood. His wife always joked that he was the biggest kid on our block. We played 2 hand touch football almost everyday. In the off season Lee always played all time QB. Great guy!
His son, Gabe, started at QB for AU and also played baseball. Gabe made it to the show and played 10 years in MLB. To this day, Lee Gros is the only reason I don't hate Auburn.

Ian Baker Finch. Spent most of a practice round at the PGA walking down the ropes talking to him and Tommy Armour III.
The other pair was Payne Stewart and Mark O'Meara. They didn't say much to anyone, mostly I guess because they were getting their brains beaten in. O'Meara was throwing clubs by the end of the round.
I asked Ian after the round how much they took off them. Gave me a big grin and said "Well mate, I flew here from Australia and me trips paid for"

Anyway, for Halloween, instead of candy, he would pass out autographed baseball cards, autographed balls, and autographed baseball bats.
This tends toward least cool athlete territory. Will Clark was a really nice guy when I met him. Matt Stafford was also pretty laid back.

Stan Musial.
I worked a sports memorabilia show in Richmond VA in 91 or 92. Met Pete Rose, Yogi Berra, a few other old timers. None of them would give us the time of day.
I had to stand with Stan Musial while they were setting him up for a TV interview. He was the nicest guy you could imagine. Reached out to shake our hands, ask our names, how we were enjoying he show... just a classy old guy.

I've never met him and he does not seem cool, but Ryan Leaf was an athlete.
