OMAHA, NEB. (WOWT/Gray News) - A convicted sex offender previously sentenced for violating the registry at least four times was arrested after police said he broke into a Nebraska home, removed his clothes, went into a sleeping child’s room and pinned them down.

Lavern Scott, 65, was arrested on Friday, April 24, and charged with attempted class two felony, burglary, and failure to register as a sex offender.

Lavern Scott (Omaha Police Department):

Officers with the Omaha Police Department said they were called to an apartment for reports of a burglary and child abuse around 1 a.m. Residents said a man entered through the front door, which was unlocked, took his clothes off, and got into a sleeping child’s bed.

The child, police said, woke up and screamed for a family member. The man, who was later identified as Scott, then allegedly pinned him down. He was “escorted” out of the home by a family member.

Police said they received another call from an Airbnb, the residents reporting that he went inside and claimed it was his home.

Criminal history:

Scott was first put on the sex offender registry in 1987 for first-degree sexual assault. He was listed under the aliases “Cookie Monster” and “Cookie X” on the Nebraska Sex Offender Registry.

In those almost 40 years, he was convicted of attempted first-degree sexual assault and violating the sex offender registry in 2017, 2018, 2022 and 2024.

He faced other charges in Nebraska, according to records. There, he was convicted three times of indecent exposure and six times of trespassing.

Officers reported that when he was found on Friday morning, he was only wearing socks.

Scott was issued a $1.25 million bond.

He would've been escorted out of my home in a body bag if I found him in my kid's room.

Holy shite...does anybody actually check this kind of shite to make sure that assholes like this dude are doing what they are supposed to do? This isn't someone slipping through the cracks...this is blatant "I don't give a frick"-ery and never being punished for it. And it could have gotten this kid raped or killed.

Unlocked? That's the minimum effort to keep your family safe.

I'd willingly go to jail for murder and not think twice about it.

Simply mind blowing that this guy was a free man in the first place. I feel like I see something like this every day now too. Our lawmakers and law enforcers are straight up failing at their jobs, and people get hurt and killed because of it. Yet they remain in their positions of power with no repercussion. How, WHY do we, as citizens who these people are supposed to be serving, let them get away with this?

Based on the details in the report, most states wouldn’t even consider pressing charges.

Dude obviously has some serious mental illness. Needs to be in an insane asylum like the old days where he’s no threat to others.

Due process and all, but I wouldn't argue if he were sent straight to the gallows.

I have talked about this several times on here: the probation and parole offices around the country are woefully underfunded. People often talk about cops and prisons but one of the most important entities in keeping communities safe is the probation and parole office. Every county and parish could probably use their P&P office budget to be doubled or tripled. It isn't as sexy and a Stryker and a load of ARs with cans and Vortex fire control system/optics but I suggest it will make a bigger difference.
