In your scenario, its likely that the candidate would either know up front that the starting salary is 92, or he would throw out his number of 85, and that's what he would be paid. Its apples and oranges dude.

Call him back and tell him FEMA gave you two-fiddy.

Getting talked down to by an insurance adjuster...

Who knows much more about this than you.

And as someone who is in industry I am well aware that General Contractors at every level including you and your "multi million" dollar projects take and use prices of dubious value and vagueness on each and every job. And if you tell me you don't you are either lying or you have never been the successful low bidder.

you have 2 projects you are bidding on and the roofs are the exact same...

Project A has no adjuster involved and you submit your bid for the work.

Project B has an adjuster.

You bid 10k for project A and get the work. Why wouldn't you submit the same quote on Project B?

Then "change order" their client to death once they get the job.

in most cases their estimate says they they will work for insurance proceeds. Every insurance company is different. Some pay to replace drip edge, some pay to replace vents, some don't pay for vents but will pay for drip edge. Some pay to remove and replace on steep charge, other pay replace only, etc. Because of this they make more profit on some roofs than other roofs. There is a minimum amount they want to make per job, if that amount isn't there then they will walk For the most part it all works out in the ends...

See what Wick Said 2 post Below yours, Wick is correct I Usually will do the work for the Insurance Proceeds, if those numbers don't fit into my profit margin, I sometimes will walk, sometimes not,

If a customer wants to upgrade something, I may include that upgrade if I'm able, Been doing this 8 yrs, and there is only 1 or 2 insurance companies that are real difficult to work #'s with, with that being said I do my hardest to get the work, and do quality, Just because the price is not what i would like doesn't mean I cut corners.
