CVT’s have been around way longer than 3 decades.

Higher output engines or larger vehicles I’d avoid them. Nissan couldn’t put them with V6 engines for a while.
Lots of companies use them now. I’d have nothing against them in smaller, 4cyl cars or small crossovers. I would probably try to dump the car before 100k though, just out of uncertainty and inability to repair them.

Well, the Touring and Elite models come with a 9-speed auto ZF tranny that a lot of people have had problems with, plus it has the engine cut off at idle feature a lot of people don't want. At EX-L level and below it comes with a 6-speed auto, which I have with AWD, and have had zero issues over 40k miles.

I’ve sold used cars for almost 5 years so I’ve driven just about every automatic transmission you can think of that’s been made in the last 25 years.
Can’t think of a CVT that I like, other than the ones in Toyota’s hybrids.

My Subaru Legacy has one, they warrantied it for 100k.

Reminded me, my coworker has a 2011 Legacy with about 120k that he just had to put a new transmission in.
It was $6,000 at Gallatin Subaru, and that’s at employee cost even. Couldn’t believe it was that much to replace.

My father is a Subaru nut and he hates their CVT. He wishes they would throw away the CVT for a new 7 or 8 speed automatic.

I wouldn't buy a Nissan or Jatco CVT given the long history of issues that they've had with them. Not that it really matters - if the CVT annoys you about Nissan, the rest of the car certainly will too. They just don't invest in product anymore. I think Infiniti is going to get canceled soon, and Nissan is really struggling to compete.
Honda, Subaru, Chevrolet, and Toyota haven't really had any big issues with their CVTs like Nissan has. We have a 6 year old Outback with a CVT. It's not my favorite type of transmission, but we have not had any problems with it at all.

Depending on the kind of vehicle you're shopping for, it is getting increasingly difficult to find anything that doesn't have a CVT. The major pressure on manufacturers to meet increasing emissions standards is leading to them being put in everything that isn't a full size pickup. I'm exaggerating only slightly.

I just took a 2015 Toyota in for a recall on the cvt a few months ago. I absolutely hate that thing. But with all the car makers going to them what are you gonna do... buy your wife an old shite car.
