CR released its new numbers last week. I will add a link at the bottom but it may be behind a paywall. I tried some editing on the chart to make it display correctly but failed.

Some notable changes:

Lexus and Mazda jump Toyota

Porsche up 5 to #4

Dodge jumps 13 spots (Dodge Chrysler Infiniti and Mini all moved up due to few redesigns and shrinking lineups

Honda moves up 2 but still abysmal for them Acura down in 28th

Audi and BMW both had big drops on the backs of their new introductions A6 and X5

GMC/Chevy/Cadillac all in the bottom ten

No. It is ranking by brand. The listed models are the least reliable model they make then the average reliability score (1-100) and the second model listed is their most reliable model.

2018 a new wrangler came out. Usually takes them a couple years to iron it out.

It's overall brand and then least reliable and most reliable model in that brand.

Consumer Reports is an echo chamber, I don’t trust anything they put out.

That is a pretty difficult position to argue with cars at least since all their data comes from member/owners that fill out pretty extensive questionnaires every year.

They also are fairly insulated given they don't take ad dollars.

Reading probably a dozen brand-specific car forums regularly I would say in general terms they are more accurate than anyone else especially JD Powers.

None of this means you aren't going to get a Lemon Lexus or a Peach Caddillac.

Anecdotal does not equal statistical.

Plus this is for the 2020 model year not previous years, it changes year to year due to many factors. Further, you have high variability in some brands from most to least reliable. CR has specific model info for older used cars as well. There is also the overarching trend of cars getting more reliable in general.

My problem with the CR reliability ratings is that it's based on owner surveys and AFAIK they have no way to account for market segment differences i.e. certain brands may have a larger number of owners that treat the vehicles like shite and consequently are more likely to report major engine and transmission problems.

ETA:

Or simply brands that don't have certain classes of vehicles in their lineup that are more likely to see rough usage like heavy duty trucks.
