Tell your colleagues to stop breaking the law and that I hope they (everyone involved) are punished to the fullest extent of the law.

I don’t think a lot of “citizens” want those jobs. Values have changed.

What’s going to have to happen is that houses are going to have to be made simpler, more like the houses your great grandparents lived in, unless you are rich.
Something has to fix this cost disease we have.
Maybe AI or 3D printing will come into the picture in a big way, but we can’t keep making these McMansions for every middle class couple.

Naw, the contractors did not lower the prices because of the illegals. They just made more profit. Same with the rest in construction
They don't have big enough margins to absorb it the additional labor expense. I was just talking to GAF about this last week.

That's the part they refuse to say out loud. If you are losing jobs to illegals, you probably have some responsibility for your lack of options.

We're the same humans our grandfathers and great grandfathers were. We have the same innate talents, and take this same innate joy in making things. The issue is pay. Illegal labor drove Americans out of the industry by undercutting their wages, and making it an unprofitable career.

They will have to hire Americans for a livable wage
The horror
The horror

I'll readily admit that I know little to nothing about construction, so maybe there's only one way you can run a company and go about constructing buildings, but it seems to me that someone will figure this out and the industry will evolve just like any other when conditions change.

I guess they will have to hire legal workers
Or pay to get them H2B status.

H2B status.

An industry (hell, even an economy) that is built on labor of illegals is not desirable. Shame on many employers for going this route.

any one else experiencing this??
No. I’m not, because all my guys either have TWIC cards or have to get onto federal sites, therefore I follow the rules of the land.

It'll have to evolve, but thats going to mean higher prices. It's not just the additional labor expense, there's a bunch of other opex you get when you go from experienced but illegal workers to trying to staff up with US citizens. Higher wages, payroll taxes, insurance, training new people and the inevitable issues with the type of people who are willing to be roofers. It'll settle out, but it will probably suck for the consumer.
That's not saying it's a bad thing, just the reality of whats coming.
Posted on 2/20/25 at 4:30 pm to deathvalleyfreak43
Seems pretty simple. Don’t try to go cheap and hire illegals.

Most guys in this type of work have a rap sheet and are less reliable. FYI.
Yep. Illegals or undependable meth heads. Thats pretty much the choice.
Posted on 2/20/25 at 4:30 pm to deathvalleyfreak43
Good...don't hire illegals bruh.
Posted on 2/20/25 at 4:31 pm to deathvalleyfreak43
I have a notion that there will be a deal made for many of them to self-deport with some kind of package, but they have to do this for a while to add incentive for people to take the deal coming out later.

And I doubt American workers will be sending half their wages out of the country.
