Tell you what. Since you seem so sure lets wager a $500 shopping trip to Walmart. If you are correct I push the cart out and take a smiling picture with the receipt sentinel. Then unload your purchases.

Absent a criminal allegation there is no law commanding shoppers to produce a receipt for legally purchased goods.

The business (private entity) can make all the rules they want once the financial transaction has been completed the paying customer has no further obligation to the store and is free to depart with said purchases.

My point is that private doesn't mean they can do what they want. The laws apply everywhere and it isn't legal to demand a receipt unless you agree to it in contract like sams or Costco.

Your point is very valid. So many on this board seem to believe that not only do they have a right to demand shoppers produce a receipt but they may enforce that demand simply because it is a private business. I would concur they can make any demands they want but no law compels anyone to comply once the purchase has been successfully completed.

I wonder even if Sam's or Costco can enforce their demand for the receipt even if there is a contract. Should a customer elect to ignore them could they involve the police absent accusing the shopper of a crime? The agreement is a civil contract and I wouldn't think the police routinely enforce contracts between two parties when there is no criminal behavior. Short of terminating the contract for failure to comply with the terms does not seem they could anything else.
