If the cause of your tinnitus is treatable, then the tinnitus may go away after treatment. The problems is, there are so many different causes, you may never know why you have it.
The most common type is associated with hearing loss. Your brain overcompensates for the loss of this specific frequency by playing it all the time. If this is the kind you have, it would not be treatable after a year.
It can be caused by other things like high blood pressure, vascular issues, tumor, infection, congestion, TMJ, Arnold-Chiari Malformation. If you successfully treat these issues, your tinnitus may resolve.
I’ve had mine for 2 years. I learned to live with it after about 6 months.

quote:That's what the ENT Dr. told me. He had it too. I've had it for over 20 yrs. Hunting, military (no ear plugs back then), bands ... lots of live loud bands, jet engines, loud elec. motors at plant (no hearing protection required or enforced back then), screaming 2 stroke engines on dirt bikes, and more. I've abused my hearing.
No cure for tinnitus, just learn to live with it.
I don't notice it most of the time. Seems like there is always background noise. I have a small fan at night.

Cup your hands, put them over your ear, with your index finger tap 20 times as hard as you can right behind your ear. Doing that gives me some relief.

I've had it for a few years now, and I can pinpoint exactly when it started. I was having a bout of vertigo that had lasted about a week to some extent or another. I had taken a nap in the recliner, woke up, and when I kicked the leg rest down and sat up the whole world spun off its axis and almost threw me into the floor. Immediately, my ears started to ring for the first time ever. They've been ringing ever since.
ETA: The first week or so is the worst. It drives you crazy. Then, it kind of fades to the background. When someone comes along and starts a thread about it, making you think about it, it comes back to the surface and it is all you can hear. Then it just kind of fades back to the background. It is always there, though.

There may be no cure, but there’s definitely therapy for it. Somewhere hearing aids and they have TRT. Tinnitus retraining therapy

For the weirdest "cure" imaginable, when you have ringing in your ears place your palms over your ears with your fingers pointing back towards your neck, holding your neck and back of your head. Lift your middle fingers up like you're "cocking" them (or giving someone the bird) then thump them down onto your neck. Sounded crazy when someone showed me but it solved like 99% of my ear ringing issues.
Strange but this has actually helped a little bit.

IF you took the vaccine, it can be a side effect and have seen a few people come in with it unfortunately

Nothing against those who got the shot, but I'm not an idiot.

duck hunting did it for me. never wore ear protection. got rung a few times. worst one was the barrel was right over my head probably less than 24 inches. Could hardly hear out of one ear for almost a year after that then it got better. some days i notice it (like today, thanks for pointing it out) and some days i dont notice at all and some days it'll drive me crazy while sleeping. never really understood why it fluctuates, but after seeing salt and caffeine mentioned here maybe i'll try and see if there is correlation.

This is your answer.

I've had it since high school. Coup de gras was target practice with a .38 Special sans ear protection, but going to tractor pulls/monster truck shows/NASCAR races as a kid without headphones or earplugs probably helped set the stage.
There is a constant ringing and enough of a hearing loss that I often have to ask people to repeat themselves, but not enough of a loss to be considered hearing impaired.

Sadly that side effect does have some treatments, the other doesn’t really unfortunately

I wasn't bothered by it until this thread. Like someone else mentioned, I don't notice it until someone mentions it.

Had it for 15+ years. I got used to it. I hear it while doing anything. ENT said not much to do. Preventing further loss. .

I had a very mild ringing in my ears for years. It started as a little tickle (for a few years), then became like a slight vibration in my ear, then the ringing. I had enough and went see an ear specialist (not ENT), and he fixed the issue in two weeks.
For me it was just eczema and a topical cream healed it. I'm not saying that's what you have, but I would definitely go see someone who specializes in that exact field.

I was 12 and fell and hit the ba k of my head on the gym floor during a basketball game. My ears immediately started ringing. That was 41 years ago. It’s never gone away

Tinnitus. There is no fix that I know of. You get used to it to the point that you don’t even notice it unless you think about it.
My experience as well. Had it since '97. If I consciously 'listen' for it, it's there. Else, it is no longer there.
