And we already allow 2nd graders to take communion which, in my opinion, is a much more difficult concept to comprehend. Not sure many 8 year olds really "understand" transubstantiation. This one is tricky for many adults.

Because the age of reason is 7. You can be confirmed at that age.

So confirmation went back to the way it used to be...in junior high school.

she actually asked me to take her to confession a while back b/c of something she did at school. We've successfully made it a somewhat regular thing for us to go together,
Awesome, that's huge!

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. Good for you!

My kid graduated catholic school last year in 8th grade. Currently in honors in a public school system(trail run). Anyway she has to take classes every Sunday morning at church. Rule changed after she graduated. Hopefully they will consider her good to go and be able to confirm with the new rule. Honestly the Sunday class teaches nothing. I’ve sat through one. But mandatory and can’t miss many days. I kind of think it’s bs actually. Life long catholic here as well

Also I went to a Christian school and had to take catechism classes every Monday night and church every weekend. Couldn’t miss a day of church or confirmation would not happen. My parents realized this was unattainable and with extracurricular school activities and such. My school had chapel once or twice a week and a heavy feel of religion. I’ve never been confirmed. 45 years old

I was merely pointing that out to support lowering the age of confirmation in the diocese. I agree.

Weird seeing a religious post with curse words in it. You may want to revisit your confirmation days.

I dont think so.

Everything was done at a much younger age in old times. Marriage, kids, dying.

I'm referring to the 'age of reason' in general.
As if it could be the same for every person!

Even if it were, it's soooo arbitrary.
What an obvious human invention.

I'd like to think that I'm a devout Christian, but I no longer hold to any such nonsense.

I can only give you my experience, which was more than miserable.

Both of my kids confirmed in the 11 grade. The preparation was run by a group of “Karen’s”. Didn’t check school schedules before scheduling any of the 28 meetings. Conflicts with baseball/volleyball, etc. When pointed out to them, their response was “well, I guess we will see what is important to them”.

The day long Sunday retreat was in February. About 40 degrees and misting rain. The enthusiastic group leader decided it was time to go outside and have a session around the Mary statue. I was looking at 70-80 year old grandparents, shivering and shaking. I asked if this was really necessary. The response? “Christians need to learn to suffer”.

This, more than anything, soured my kids on the Church.

As someone who didn’t make his confirmation because it was the 11th grade in New Orleans, I am happy that it’s the 8th grade. No offense, but I had a job when I was a junior that made it hard to go to the classes on Tuesday or Monday. Not to mention playing sports that was let out at 6:30 PM or have a game then. Smart move imo.

Same. Now no one is Catholic because it’s just a giant cult.

I know our Wednesday services as well as youth programs are littered with Catholic teens, many there on Sunday as well. I dont know if other communities are seeing this happen, but maybe that is why the need to move to 7th, which seems more appropriate to me anyway. Now, dont get me wrong, the lifelong super involved Catholics, you dont see those kids at our Baptist churcn, but there is a pretty large contingent of the less devout. I am not judging at all, just observing.

Yes indeed, not to be completely jaded, but it is helpful, all the good looking Catholic girls seem to attract the heck out of all the protestant yound fellas....keeps the crowd nice and robust. I am not sure they even know it is a Church.

Not catholic, and hope my waspy heretic arse can say this but from a Baptist perspective I don’t like seeing little kids being baptized. 13 or so they should be getting the purpose taught to them and let them decide when ready. Whether it’s teens or later. Otherwise it’s just a kid getting to be dunked in water imo.

This is great news. The Sacrament of Confirmation is a much needed Grace at the beginning of the teen years into adulthood when so many temptations and evils are exposed. The Grace will also help those ages to stick with their religion as they are blessed as a soldier of Christ with the Sacrament.

Sacramento Diocese. My kids were confirmed in the seventh grade.

That’s not much different than when I was a Baptist. I went on the mourning bench at age 12.
