Back in the 70s/80s, it was the 8th grade in New Orleans. I always thought that was a little too young. I was glad they moved it to 11th grade later on. By 11th grade, you have some sense of whether you want to be confirmed or not. In 8th grade, you just did what you were told.

Real confirmation is just accepting Jesus died for your sins and choosing to follow him. We don’t need a priest to tell us when it’s time for that.

It's not in the Bible (the word confirmation). They take a few verses along with tradition and then voila you have salvation or a sacrament which gets you closer to salvation, supposedly.

It's a great idea. As an 11th grader gets have way too many commitments going on and moving the confirmation process makes it a whole lot easier. especially for catholic kids not going to a catholic high school. There sports, ACT testing/prepping/college visits/proms......7th grade makes way more sense.

Everyone I know going back to the 70s 80s and 90s confirmation was in eighth grade

I was confirmed before attending 8th grade at Chalmette Middle School. I was still in Arabi Elementary and going to Catechism at St. Maurice and that school only went to the 7th grade at that time.
First Communion was when I was real young.

My grandpa made communion on Saturday and was confirmed on Sunday - 6th grade (1932)
My mom made communion in 2nd grade & was confirmed in 6th grade
I was confirmed in 8th grade
The children need the graces given at Confirmation for high school. Our children are exposed to so much evil at an early age because of the internet, phones, and social media that they need all the help they can get to navigate the world.
Confirmation has been wrongly advertised as making an adult decision in the church - it’s a sacrament. We will never understand the mysteries of God, so we cannot wait until we think we understand the sacrament until we receive it. We won’t ever understand - that’s the point of faith

I was confirmed in the 8th grade. If they had waited until the 11th I'd have never been confirmed. I agree that it should be later, a 7th grader is just running on indoctrination and probably doesn't fully understand what he/she is committing to. I know I didn't.

CCD is a slog if you don’t go to catholic school. But to be honest, I didn’t know whether I wanted to be confirmed or not at that age. It was just something my parents made me do.

I'm sure they will eventually. Lafayette is in the process now. My son confirmed in 9th and my daughter will in 8th. I guess they have to step it down over time
