Build a homelab
Lol this is way too expensive for a recent graduate to undertake. There are multiple platforms like tryhackme, hackthebox, and proving grounds that are affordable as hell.
Home labs are going the way of the dodo unless you own your own app company.

Comptia Network+ and Security+ are fantastic starting points that will land you a job as soon as you have them. A+ first if he really didn't retain much.

Learn SQL, and be prepared to truly understand data. That's how you survive in IT these days.
Exactly. What's truly valuable is an IT person that can communicate and understand what various departments, customers, etc. are asking for. Understanding the data is important.
Kind of mixed thoughts on SQL. The cloud providers are really dumbing down the data layer and needing to know raw SQL.
Data Scientists seem to be the new hotness. You would need a basic level of SQL, but stronger in the mathematics world. Python, R, Scala and some Java work here.

Might be able to qualify for a decent paying government job in that field. Tell him to check out usajobs.gov

Leviton in New Orleans hires a lot of new grads for software developer positions. They also hire developers that don't have degrees.

1. A college degree is pretty much worthless. People we hire from India/Asia all have bachelor's, with some having masters or even phds. We do not even look at that, as it does indicate any worth of the individual. Some of our best employees degrees in English or former Airline Mechanic, while some of the worst have a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Bangladesh or China.
I know it's not going to be popular for recent grads, but this is pure fact. I could give 2 shits about what kind of degree or if they even have a degree when it comes to hiring.
Salesforce is a great platform to work on and has a ton of free training from Salesforce themselves(google trailhead)
Other than that AWS and Azure cloud certs are white hot right now.

Whole-heartedly agree. Most comp sci majors from Louisiana I work with don't know a ton about much when they first start. Business school has done more for me in tech than any comp sci degree could.
Most colleges do not encourage enough python scripting for linux based tools. If more fresh grads knew this they could make a killing.

Where did he graduate?
Louisiana Lafayette. Degree in Informatics.
He probably knows my cousin.

His full time job right now should be applying for jobs. He should be applying to at least 5 jobs a day at this point and be preparing for potential CS interviews.
I think that the key is to throw as many apps out there as he can and worry more about location later. I definitely did not really want to be in my current location, but unfortunately, that's just where I was able to get a job. If he has options later on and can get a job in a city he likes, then all the power to him.

Tell him to apply for one of these open positions at Viemed (based in Lafayette): Business Systems Analyst, Data Analyst. Tell him to look over both and choose one, as a hiring manager (not at Viemed), I can see if someone applies to multiple positions at my company and that's somewhat of a red flag to me.
Perficient and CGI are always hiring.

Not trying to be an arse, but if he graduated a year ago, can't find steady work since then in this job market, and his dad is out beating the bushes for him, I think it's likely him and not the market.
And directly from the UL website:
"The demand of IT/IS professionals is extremely high as our 90% of graduating classes always have their job offers before the graduation"
So either that's a total fabrication on a University website, or, see above.

Staffing Service? Robert Half and Lofton are a couple.

Understood but I’ve seen too many people start off as help desk and get stuck for a while. If he’s any good m, they try to keep them there. If he leaves, his primary experience is help desk and that’s the interviews he will get.
He should look for system support jobs, in particular corporate system support jobs.
There are fewer of this jobs but there are some for entry level. These positions will allow him to move up quicker plus a wider range of specialities.

I was torn between networking and development when I started. With development, there are tons of things you can do on your own to learn and figure out how to do things. You can even pass that as experience if you want but be careful you don't overstate your abilities.
There are networking simulators like GNS3 that help with learning networking. But even GNS3 requires an image from whatever router you're mirroring.
In the end, I enjoy development. Worst case scenario, if nobody will hire you, you can work on a website or applications on your own that can be valuable over time.

He also needs to know if he likes front-end or back-end. I bet I've been told a million times by applicants that they're "full-stack". Maybe one of them actually was.
What would you consider full stack?

Robert Half is one of the best staffing firms in the world. I worked for them before switching over to the dark side and they truly are premiere. However, he is highly unlikely to land a permanent gig from them based off of the information we know right now. He is much more likely to land a contract job doing help desk/support. That's not a terrible thing but just want to temper expectations on that side.
The reason isn't because RH are buttheads. It's moreso because they are very costly on the permanent staffing side and virtually no company is paying a 25-30% placement fee for a college grad two months before the next batch of college grads. If that's the realm the company is looking to hire, they attended career fairs last month.

Finance bro. We need computer guys. Both password resetters and ones that can create bots for trading and managing orderflow. Good money there.
