Came out one morning and it was busted?
Rock hit it and deflected, busting it?
There's a dozen things you can tell them. If you're worried about being untruthful, don't worry! It's OK to lie to the insurance companies.

Progressive is now telling me that this might not be covered unless we can tell them how it happened.

This is why attorneys always say to never talk to an insurance company before talking to them. You can so easily frick yourself over when talking to your insurance company. Assuming you’ve already told them that you don’t know what happened, it’s gonna be damn hard to come back and prove what happened to result in a broken sunroof.
Always, always, always blame it on a rock. Saying “I don’t know” gives the insurance company a reason to delay the claim since they have no idea how to apply it.
Hit a big hole in the road that caused the car to violently shake, causing a broken sunroof? That would be collision.
A rock hit the sunroof? That would be comprehensive.
You gotta identify a peril - or a cause - for the broken glass. Can’t just say “I don’t know what happened”.

I can't help, but I can tell the story of a guy I know who once had a goose fly into his windshield, cracking it pretty good. His agent legit asked him if it was his or the goose's fault. True story.

Have any of you ever had your sunroof in your car just break , it was basically like it exploded?
What type of car? My first car was a Scion tC(Toyota owned them). Was driving one day and the sunroof exploded. No rock or anything. The way the glass broke made it look like it was broke from the inside out, not something hitting it from the outside. Believe there was some sort of malfunction with the sunroof motor that caused it. The dealership looked at me crazy when I told them.
Looked it up and this has happened to other Scion cars but no recall was ever made. Curious if your wife’s car is a Toyota model?

Exactly....so why come at me all fricking defensive as if you can't cover the claim?
Because they are an insurance company.
How else would a sunroof smash? I would bet you find a scratch on the roof where a rock impact happened. You might even find a rock in the vehicle.
If you said someone vandalized the car or fell on the car, they'd cover it. If you tell them that the sunroof exploded randomly, they will blame the manufacturer.
I have heard of sunroofs popping out of their mounts and shattering because the bodywork flexes more freely than the glass. But that's very rare, especially on a new vehicle that presumably is as structurally rigid as it ever will be. You'll have a hard time getting the manufacturer to agree that their workmanship caused it. The dealership service department would never be able to figure out a root cause. Which means they'll never get a warranty claim approved by the OEM even if they wanted to. And the more shady OEM's like Hyundai or Kia would actively work to deny it anyways. You might have some luck with a higher end brand like Mercedes, Lexus, or Cadillac but that's still going to be an uphill battle.
In all likelihood, your glass was damaged by debris on the road. Likely a rock thrown from a nearby truck or some kind of branch or nut falling from a tree.
Either that or your wife's friends kicked the sunroof out while doing some really weird stuff in that car.

2 weeks old. Take it back to the dealer and ask them to warranty it. Tell them it broke overnight in your garage.

Years ago I was the passenger in a Honda Accord when the sunroof suddenly exploded.
Never heard anything make impact. Plus we were on the interstate with no other vehicles even remotely close to us. So, I don't think it was a rock.
The only thing I could figure was that it had something to do with the sudden change in air pressure in the cab: The sunroof was tilted open, and it shattered at the exact moment when my buddy cracked his passenger window so that he could smoke.

How about this for the Farmers Museum:
You and your wife were having sex on the roof of your car. When you hit the spot, she jammed her foot into the sunroof and busted the glass.
Your insurance agent or claims adjuster would have chuckled and said we will just say a rock hit it, be no one has been able to hit “that spot.”

2018 Honda Pilot, sunroof exploded on the interstate last month. Scared my wife silly. $518 for a new one. Out of pocket ($500 ded). Our son had this happen 4 years ago on a Honda Accord. There is a class action lawsuit against Honda over this. Seems it is fairly common.

Tell them you were driving through New Orleans and a random bullet went through the sunroof

It seems I’ve read somewhere about this happening more commonly with sunroofs that have been tinted.

You're fine. Sometimes glass will just break. It's covered no matter what happened, unless you did it yourself.
1. They have to assign blame somewhere. Insurance is all based on risk. It's all numbers. They have to be able to analyze risk.
2. People are ALWAYS trying to get over on insurance companies. They might put you through the ringer a bit, but they're probably trying to make sure it's a legit claim.
