In Air Traffic, there are some young superstars. But the commitment to the career has dropped of drastically in the past twenty years. I suspect that is true for most career fields.

It has nothing to do with the varsity and everything to do with the standards.

We should never lower standards for anything, ever.

Union Pacific had $6.4B in net income in 2023, on $24.1B in revenue. They could have given every single one of their 31,000 employees a $100,000 bonus and still run at a ~13% net profit.

That’s fricking wild. Especially when you realize that in 2000, they were running at ~8% net profit on less than half the revenue with over 50,000 employees.

So.. yeah, if they aren’t finding qualified candidates it seems like a pretty easy fix.

All of this. Look I get that companies are beholden to the stockholders now… but come the frick on. Can’t bitch about industry standards when you’re unwilling to pay competent employees yet dish out 7 billion. That share price will surely plummet if/when they’re in the firing line of a major incident.

diminishing qualified personnel in various sectors of our society.

I would argue that all of these examples have a common denominator which is they’re all industries run, controlled or heavily regulated by government. Our government has been rife with incompetence for years but now it’s spilling over into sectors which require a higher level of performance.

NASA, ATC, FEMA, SEC, FAA, CDC…the list goes on and on.

We no longer have serious competent adults running essential agencies and they’ve turned into what’s essentially a jobs program at all levels of state and federal govt.

ETA: look at NASA for example. Who would’ve ever thought that they would get two astronauts stranded and not be abl to get them back from a space station…to the point where they need to enlist the help of a private company? Hell….they're still stuck up there. Shameful.

No mystery there.. her family im sure is quite aware that once her info is released they will be the target of all sorts of hate and vitriol from online losers ,while in the middle of trying to grieve and process her loss… unfortunately though im sure her identity will come out sooner than later .

If you crashed a plane killing 60+ people your name would be released.

For Trump, loyalty is the only qualification. He’s putting a lot of completely unqualified white people in charge of important things.

Two of the people you have freaked out over the most are not white.

And regarding Patel, he’s more than qualified and has nothing to do with his skin color.

You only hate him because he exposed Obama’s corruption.

Have you ever been involved in a government contract bid? It is really hard, if not impossible, for the best solution to win. It's not even just the pointless stuff that I hope they will now remove, it's lowest bid tendencies and poorly written requirements that make it hard to see that so many respondents actually have no idea how they will meet the ask.

Bingo

And the easiest way to save money - less (or cheaper) resources and an unrealistic timeframe where corners have to be cut

And that is just for CONSIDERATION of a bid.

Check out the trucking industry - the rate that this country is importing poor Indian labor is astounding. And it's not like they're sending over competent people - they're emptying their ghettos and sending over knuckle draggers to be behind the wheel of semi's in our country. Guys that just don't have the common sense to walk to a bathroom and will just shite in the parking lots, bathe once every two weeks, throw trash EVERYWHERE, because they're used to that back in India.
Even a lot of the local drivers as well can barely drive. Manufacturers had to rush automated transmissions into the market because these dumbasses couldn't figure out a 10-speed manual.
Stay the hell away from semi's these days - and if you come up on stopped traffic make sure to watch your rearview mirrors to make sure the idiots coming up behind you are slowing down and aren't on their phones. There's been a whole lot of death and destruction because semi drivers are too busy watching buttcheeks on tiktok and not the road in front of them.

Yes I can verify most this just by reading facebook trucker groups. And one very interesting post a few weeks ago in the middle of the snow storms claimed that a trooper in one of the midwest states, told a trucker that 95% of these bad weather crashes were caused by foreign drivers. Either the trooper (if that part of the story is true or not really moot) or driver/poster makes the claim these foreigners have no idea how to drive on snow.
