I'm not saying you are wrong about this info, nice post btw, but I am saying that in 1941 that industry was so infantile that with any amount of political commitment every one of the Pros for going to Atlanta would have been overcome and been turned into a nonissue.

A comparable city to Atlanta could have easily made the pitch, I totally agree.

Had to google, but Monroe, La was 28k people compared to Atlanta at 300k (800k metro) in 1940. The only other potential choice for a hub for their new network would have been Dallas, but Atlanta was more centrally located for their routes.

One for sure could argue maybe New Orleans could have been the hub that Atlanta was and politicians missed the boat, but there was no reason for Delta to entertain staying no matter what La did.

The New Orleans routes weren't added until after the move to ATL. Chicago and Miami added in 1945 per this map

I remember a story I heard years ago, perhaps not true.

But it w me that Shreveport could have been Dallas but the Louisiana government botched a big deal to either put a huge airport there or make it a hub for one of the big airline companies.

Instead it went to Dallas and eventually that city turned into what it is today.

I don't have any knowledge of that but do not doubt it in any way. I remember as a young kid in the 70's Atlanta, Houston, and NOLA were all potentially going to reach a million people. Maybe not exactly a million but these three cities were absolutely rivals with the same opportunity for prosperity and truthfully, NOLA was probably in the best position for growth in the next few decades. Well, it is very obvious that the rest of the 20th century did not bode well for New Orleans by comparison. Both of those other cities have more people living in them than our entire state, NOLA has steadily lost its population and tax base with zero hope or expectation of finding success. This really pisses me off. What have we seen instead of growth and prosperity over that time? We don't have a public school in this state that you can feel good about, yet we continually prove that money can't fix this problem by throwing good after bad. I refuse to count how many statewide political positions have been occupied by either conficted felons or future convicted felons. Our #1 cash crop has since gone from Sugar to 18 yr old highschool graduate with absolutely no import strategy. So we are losing any marketable and educated Louisiana kids to "business friendly" states, we are not importing any "or equals", we do get to keep those not able to go elsewhere for opportunity which by definition is anything but optimal. And we still seem as a state that we are doing nothing about it. I've seen too many politicians talk about changing our state only to fall into the portapotty of parasites and into oblivion at the capitol. Seeing our place in this hierarchy of states really has an ominous feel to it. What I wouldn't give to be in the position we were in during the 70's as opposed to today is a very short list and frankly, I don't think I would give anything because the hole we have dug as a state does not appear to be one we can get out of.

May be a little different but along the same lines, back in the late 90's governor Mike Foster put up signs along highway 90 between Lafayette and Boutte. Future I-49 corridor. LOL

Wasn't Jimmy Swaggart going to build a Christian amusement park on scale with Six Flags and Disneyland?

GM built a plant in Shreveport in 1984. It was open until the UAW deal forced its closure in 2010 and GM small pickup production moved to Missouri.

Idk if I would I go that far. There’s at least a handful of good public schools. But that’s still not saying much.

A Delta hub and the world’s busiest airport in Monroe would be pretty sweet.

Delta was already in Monroe and the politicians run them off.

Shell oil originally was thinking Lake Charles would be what the Houston ship channel has become but the locals wanted more control than Shell was willing to give.
