True, but I want a vehicle dedicated to taking those miles for several years.

Get a used Toyota Avalon. Smooth ride, decent mileage, trouble free and comfortable. I love mine.

I'm looking at used Nissan 370Z. They get close to good enough mpg. Anybody here have/had one?

Do yourself a favor and drive a Scion xB. I went through the same search you did. The Scion xB is the best commuter vehicle I've found. Mine has 114k miles on it and I've just done basic maintenance. It's got a lot of pick up and handles really well. It has almost as much interior room as my wife's trailblazer. They can be picked up new for 20k.
There isn't a better vehicle for the money out there.

Mazda 6
Mazda makes great cars but gets overlooked often. Extremely reliable and well equipped

25k will buy a lot of gas any year.
My commute is 125 miles round trip and it took over 40mpg for it to be worth me buying a new car. I had a spreadsheet made and everything.

My motivation isn't purely money based. Good mpgs is just a plus. I don't want to put all of those miles on my truck.

I went with a late model Altima. Gets 40 mpg if I can keep it under 70. I got a base model so can't say much about the luxuries but it does have Bluetooth. I think you can get a new model with a lot of options for $20k.

The redesigned Cruz looks very nice. I rented a 2016 model recently and was very impressed.
The new Honda Civic looks pretty legit too.
Buick Verano is a nice compact car with good MPG. It has that traditional Buick quietness and stress free ride. Probably more than $25k.

If dependability and resale value are important to you then I'd go with a Suburu. It's a bonus that they handle off road pretty well. Their whole line essentially fits your budget but the impreza is about 7k under your budget brand new.
If you are comfortable at your budget, grab the Outback. USed demand on those cars are exceptionally high and you can average in low-mind 30s on the highway

How about the Subaru BRZ? I'm going by a Subaru dealership on Saturday to window shop.

My last smaller car was a Mazda 3, traded it in 11 years later with 130,000 miles, never had any major issues. I don't know if the newer models have the heated/cooled seats (probably do), but should satisfy the rest of your list and come in under $20K.

In terms of sports coupes in your price range, it's probably the best you'll do. However, I would be surprised if your dealer had a base model to show you. You will probably have to order one. If you're used to driving a truck you'll definitely feel the lack of horsepower, though
The rest of your suburu stuff applies here. High mpg, dependable, best resale value, lowest cost of ownership

I'm seeing 25/34 mpg on the C300. Anybody with personal experience can verify those numbers?
In your price range you are looking at an older 6cyl C300 which will get low 20's, about 21-22 real world. I don't know about the newer 4cyl versions of the C300 or the other models like the turbo 4 C250.

I thought the BRZ would be a faster car?

Yeah, I walked away from the right of a Benz. More upkeep than I care for.

I own a German mark and they are totally worth it to maintain. Went from a Camry to a 5 series and its night and day. Upkeep is totally worth it. You have something that stirs the soul, something tangible that you love. That fricking Camry, though top of the line, was a TPOS. Drove like a boat. I literally make up reasons to drive the 5 series...obviously it's not a C class, but in general expensive parts make better cars IMHO.
