Warren Harding was nowhere nearly as bad of a President as lazy historians classify him as.

It did exist. It's just not what many people though it was.

Rosa Parks didn't want to give up her seat because she was tired.

Good one. She was handpicked for the job, and only got it because the first choice inconveniently got pregnant out of wedlock.

quote:

Rosa Parks has entered the historical record as a fundamentally apolitical person who spontaneously refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Ala., bus because she was exhausted, both by her day’s work and by the grinding force of racism. This is totally untrue, of course. Parks was an activist — in fact, she was the secretary of her local NAACP chapter and had attended leadership training. Her NAACP colleagues had been on active lookout for someone to challenge segregation in public transportation, previously rejecting Claudette Colvin, a teenager who became pregnant after her arrest for refusing to give up her bus seat to a white passenger, as an unreliable figurehead for a campaign.

Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. was the first to say "ask what your country can do for you?" JFK stole it.

J. Robert Oppenheimer quoted Hindu scripture from the Bhagavad Gita and is often misquoted. He actually said, "I am become death, the shatterer of worlds. If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst forth at once in the sky, that would be like the splendor of the Mighty One."

There's a fantastic show on the History Channel (&app) called 10 Things You Didn't Know.

It should be required viewing for every American

It was kind of shitty the way we did England. They financed the wars to fight the natives, and was asking for a tax to cover the war expenses. We said nah. But people get mad France did the same to us in WW2

Yup. I'm an US history teacher, and this is hands down the biggest outrage every year.

Common Historical Misconceptions.

1. The Pacific Theater was more bloody than the European Theater. The truth of the matter is if you look at the casualty levels of each infantry division, both Army & Marine from both Theaters, you'd see the 2nd Marine Div suffered a little over 12,000 total casualties in the war, making them the division that suffered the hugest casualty rate in the Pacific. But that casualty rate would not have got them even in the top ten in Europe from a casualty standpoint. That distinction belongs to the US Army 3rd Inf Div who had almost 26,000 casualties. Even as far down as #10 on the list of divisions suffering casualties in the ETO, you'll find the US Army 80th Inf Div which suffered over 17,000 casualties.

2. That units in Europe stayed in combat for longer periods of time than those in the Pacific. Four of the top 5 US divisions with the most days in combat in WWII fought in the Pacific (US Army 32nd, 37th, and Americal Inf Divisions and 1st Cav Div)

3. That France just rolled over and surrendered to Germany without a fight. The truth of the Battle of France in 1940 is there were. over a quarter million French killed or wounded defending their country. And on the other side of the ledger they inflicted 150,000+ casualties on the Germans, destroyed over 1,200 German aircraft and knocked out almost 800 German tanks. And all this took place in just six weeks.
