The US military thought of them as the greatest military force on horse back in the world. No one could defeat them in a fight.

The Comanches are an interesting study. They were master horsemen, but had stone age intellect.

They were savvy enough to recognize the opportunity the civil war presented, and signed a treaty of cooperation with the Confederacy.

One thing that blows my mind is that native amrican horse culture had only really been booming for a generation or two when we were fighting them. The iconic indian on a horse thing was only around for a very short period of time

disease did them in more so than the European invaders. I think the force that fought at Little Big Horn (different tribes, just referencing numbers) was made up of 9000-2000 warriors and was the biggest force the indians had put to field. It was a numbers/technology game

Our family farm, in Comanche county Kansas, is supposed to have had upwards of 50,000 Comanche living on it and surrounding farms. There's still arrowheads and other stuff just laying around to this day.
Our family homesteaded there around the turn of the century.

Wrong.

For many years, the US military was completely ineffective at anything other than escort duty. Only when they were allowed to eradicate buffalo and Palo Duro was raided/horses stolen were the Comanche defeated.

They stubbornly refused to allow Texas Rangers to do the job. If they would have funded the raising of a division of Rangers instead of wasting it on INFANTRY, they would have been wiped out much sooner. The US army and Washington had no idea what they were up against and how to fight them. The Rangers knew you had to take the fight to them, find their water holes and refuges, and crush their ability to raid.

Another thing I found fascinating is that there may not have been as many bison before white people showed up. Pre-disease Indians may have naturally kept the bison population pretty low.

You have any citations about this?

It's a widely accepted theory now. Just like human disease was spreading through the Indians before Europeans really showed up the same thing was happening to the bison. Diseases such as brucellosis and others were killing off the bison.
