Commanches

Been reading about them a lot recently.
They were scary. They did a lot of really horrible stuff. We did some shitty stuff too to be fair, but they as a whole were extremely aggressive and mean. Look up Rachel Plummer and her capacity (can’t link the wikipedia on my phone)
The most interesting thing I’ve learned so far is that the Comanches as a group probably didn’t exist till the 1600s, when mass migrations from colonization started affecting all of the Americas.
As a result, their society was a little different other similar societies including not really having a fully developed religion
Another thing I found fascinating is that there may not have been as many bison before white people showed up. Pre-disease Indians may have naturally kept the bison population pretty low.

The Comanches are an interesting study. They were master horsemen, but had stone age intellect.

They had very low fertility rates and as a result were very free to adopt. About 1/3 of their population was white, hispanic, or mixed race. Quanah Parker, the last war chief, was half white. They were total badasses, and fought the US to a draw until 1876. During the civil war they rolled back the Texas frontier an average of 100 miles.

No it doesn’t. The first of the pandemics was sweeping through the Indian populations in the 1500s/1600s. That’s when the bison started booming. It was t until the mid 1800s the bison hunting became a major item and millions were killed at extreme rates and it was controversial at its time. The Army was openly trying to drive the bison extinct as they knew the Indians needed the bison so much that without it, the Indians would have to be supplied on reservations. People were lobbying Congress to save the bison/buffalo.

Yea.. Commanches are though... But not as though as Apaches... Not only did they fight John Wayne, but during WWII, when paratroopers jumped they yelled, "Geronimooooooooooooo."

Not a real tribe but collection of mistakes and frick ups from older tribes pushed Westward.
What is really interesting is that Native Americans had at least 3 to 4 periods of Super tribes, or Nations. The last being the Mississippi confederation. They controlled a majority of what is now the United States, and are believed to have had a complex society, established trading routes, multiple cities over 50,000 people one over 250,000 etc. they would have easily beaten the Europeans back into the sea as they could have send armies of 100,000 or more in waves. My ancestor Tecumshe was not trying to unite the tribes for the first time, he was trying to reunite them again.
The previous Nations were strong enough to sent Aztecs fleeing to Mexico. We landed in America at exactly the right time, between periods of unification and when the numbers had been decimated by disease by trade with European fisherman, etc

The Indians of the plains from all the Westerns were no better fighters or any more successful than the chickasaws, Mohawks or Eastern Indians. It just no movies other than last mohican. In Kings Phillips war the causality rate was estimated at about 15-20% of all colonials, and almost every townships was attacked. That would be almost 100 million dead today.
