A Colorado man who survived the 1999 Columbine school shooting and later became an advocate for fighting addiction has died. Routt County Coroner Robert Ryg said Saturday that 37-year-old Austin Eubanks died overnight at his Steamboat Springs home. Advertisement There were no signs of foul play. A Monday autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death. Eubanks was shot in the hand and knee in the Columbine attack that killed 12 classmates and a teacher, including Eubanks' best friend. He became addicted to drugs after taking prescription pain medication while recovering from his injuries.

He later worked at an addiction treatment center and traveled the U.S. telling his story. Eubanks' family said in a statement that he "lost the battle with the very disease he fought so hard to help others face," KMGH-TV reports. The family added: "We thank the recovery community for its support. As you can imagine, we are beyond shocked and saddened and request that our privacy is respected at this time."

Tragic.

The victims of that day span far and wide and transcend time.

Prayers to that young mans family

I cannot imagine ever being the same after what he went through. To watch your friends and teachers get slaughtered and die in front of you is something I cannot fathom.

horrible.. its crazy how one random event can totally change the outcome of your entire life. Crazy to think... would he ever become an addict if that day hadnt happened. Sad

Maybe - there was a guy in the Class of '99 who looked a lot like Bewildered Jags Fan. But it could be a coincidence.

Just a terrible deal all around, I couldnt imagine what those kids lived through and continue to struggle with till this day. I used to talk to a youth football coach who coached one of the shooters(Dylan, I believe. It's been years since we've talked). He said it's something how one day youre teaching an innocent kid how to play a game and the next he's on tv as a killer. Makes you wonder what happened along that kids life to turn him into a person who would do something like that.

When I had my Catholic confirmation retreat in Abbeville/Mouton Cove area back then they sent 6-8 Columbine students there with us for the weekend. Didn’t find out until the final ceremony that they were among us. It was a moving experience hearing the stories that last night.

So does he count as an additional Columbine victim? He should.

To survive such a fricked up event and then die later under those circumstances is sad.

Why is this news?

Columbine was a massive news story at the time. It was really the first mass school shooting that received that level of attention.
