There is a huge grove of aspens off Kebler pass so we will be checking out that area. Hoping to catch turning color.

Colorado is nothing like Alaska.

Just mountains, and they are even very different. AK is predominately roadless wilderness.

Crested Butte

Crested Butte was my first experience with summer time in Colorado a few years ago, we road tripped to Denver for a few days then moved over to Crested Butte. Drove up to Paradise Divide and camped for the night, checked out Emerald Lake, hiked Judd Falls, I couldn't believe the scenery and I can't wait to go back.

The drive up to Paradise Divide in my Baw250 was sketchy

Proximity to park city and mountains is excellent, but if you're looking for a bar and restaurant scene...

It's no Chicago for 3 months out of the year but it's getting better.

I'll take the cleanest city in America, better demographics, and 300 sunshine days a year and the fact I can have fun year round over a lot of cities.

No longer stuck with 3% beers so, they got thst going for them.

It took me all of a week or so to acclimate to the altitude. I dont even notice it unless im up around 13-14k ft in the mountains somewhere

Funny story:

I was up around 12K ft. altitude and some locals told me about an area I could pull my bike over on the side of the road and there was a trail that was a nice walk with great scenery about 1/4 mile from the road. I grab my old SLR camera and head down the trail and took some great pictures then realized I didn't bring my zoom lens.

I walked back to the bike, got the zoom lens and walked back down the trail. Overall I went about 1 mile along the trail in those 2 trips and when I came back to the bike there were 2 young ladies on mountain bikes.

One if them commented she saw my La. license plate and asked where I was from. I told her New Orleans. She then asked if it was really below sea level like she'd heard and I assured her it was. Then she said this, "Man, you must be suffering up in this altitude." And I really was since I wasn't acclimated to the thin air.

Yep. I'll take outdoor access to endless bar and restaurant stuff. You can find that almost any mid sized to large city. Nothing special about that.

I bet wide vehicle with long wheel base had pretty good pucker factor! I did look at going to Emerald Lake just passed Gothic, not sure if we will have time. Want to go to beaver ponds to try a scare up a trout.

Did you drive the road up to Schofield Park? You can catch a trailhead to West Maroon Pass and down the other side into Aspen. It is supposed to be awesome in the Summer.

I am wondering what the road is like from Emerald Lake to Schofield Park.

My memory is a bit rusty but we made a full loop, Crested Butte, Paradise Divide, Emerald Lake, Judd Falls, back to Crested Butte. At one point I had the route saved on my office computer and may still have it, I can try to find it tomorrow if you’re still interested. We passed the turn for Schofield Pass(which I believe leads to Aspen) but it looked a bit more demanding of off-road capabilities than I was willing to chance in a big truck. The entire loop was ~21 miles if I remember right and doable in about 1-1.5 hours not counting any stops along the way.

The entire loop we did would be doable in a stock 4WD, if coming from Crested Butte and going to Emerald Lake that section is doable with 2wd, I wouldn’t go past Emerald Lake without 4x4 though. There’s a pretty narrow pass right past Emerald Lake that’s pretty steep and would require 4x4 Low after Emerald Lake.

We can’t. Two kids in college at two different schools and one doesn’t get a Mardi Gras break (she’s out of state). Oldest wants to use vacation days that he might otherwise lose so we need to do it in 2019.

CO is wonderful. Love it.

We go every year and every year it’s surreal.

Our Scout troop does summer camp in CO versus TX.

In July, 40s for lows and 70s for highs. Man. Love it!

If you ever get the chance: Million Dollar Highway from Silverton to Ouray. Strap it on.

I watched the Lite Bright Jeep video of Black Bear Pass and Imogene today. I’d have to wear Depends if I road shotgun on those trails.

I did a trail outside of Boulder last weekend. That’s a lot more fun than getting stuck in the mud.

The wife and I will be going to Estes Park in October for a little get away. I hear Estes Park is majestic.

That drive along the Colorado River is probably the most beautiful I have ever seen.
