English Lit Major and I have been a financial advisor for 10 years now.
I thought the actual skills I developed while studying have helped me greatly; there aren't many other majors that require such an intense amount of reading. The experience made me more capable, which I needed because I didn't know what the hell I wanted to do.

I worked in my field for 12 years but with the downturn in the marine sector I now work in sales but have an engineering degree. If I weren't married with kids I could have moved away and stayed in my field but not much here anymore ...

That's funny. Right out of college some of the first questions I was asked in multiple interviews were about my GPA

Maybe the times are passing you up

Same here. I felt lucky if they asked about my degree. Guess that's what happens when you start at the bottom and work your way up.

I know that is more economics based, but you cover a good bit of econ while getting a degree in finance, usually, unless you go with a accounting/finance degree route.

I was told after your first job they never ask again.

About 5 years ago I interviewed for a job. Had a great first interview, then the guy asked for my transcripts. I sent them to him, but couldn't for the life of me understand why someone gave a shite when I had already been out of school for 5 years.

Went back for a second interview and he started asking me to tell him about grades I made in calculus in 2003. Needless to say I didn't take the job.

In all sincerity, never had anyone as for transcript. If they did now (+15 yrs post college) RED FLAG GTFO.

A million years ago, I graduated in Personnel Management but worked in sales and then management my whole career. But the heavy load of psychology classes I took were invaluable throughout my career.

And so do software companies

I do want to say do what you love, the rest will follow, but there are too many short-shortsighted and narrow-minded people like the above that put more value on the what rather than the how and the why.

Most jobs, especially in entry or just lower levels, really don't require a specific college degree, much less a college degree at all, but it makes certain kinds of people feel better. It also makes filtering applications easier, that's really all it's there for.

Curious to see how prevalent it is for companies to hire people with degrees outside of their field.

I have heard companies don't care as long as you have a degree in something and I've also heard they can be very specific to what you graduate in.

I see this mostly with good looking women.

I do have a question. Has anyone ever had to prove you have a degree?

What stops people from jobs that says "requires BS in so and so", but the resume gets you the interview, and interview gets the job.

Anyone know anyone who didn't have the requirements and got the job?
