I've always been fascinated by the Civil War campaigns and how Louisiana was involved. The last few years I've been researching the stories behind the coastal defense fortifications built to protect Louisiana from the Union Naval Invasion.

Anyone visited these sites and have any cool stories related?

Fort Jackson, Buras-Triumph, Mississippi River:

Fort Saint Philip, Buras-Triumph, Mississippi River (opposite Fort Jackson):

Fort Proctor, Shell Beach, Lake Borgne

Tower Dupre, Bayou Dupre, Lake Borgne

Before Katrina:

After:

Fort Macomb, Chef Menteur Pass

Fort Pike, The Rigolets

Fort Livingston, Barataria Pass, Grand Isle

I have been to Fort Pike and Fort Proctor both were cool but Proctor was a little cooler because it is unfinished and abandoned. I would like to see the other ones you posted.

I need to get me a boat. Sucks that Tower Dupre has been reduced to a pile of rubble. Would've been cool to poke around in an old Martello Castle from the 1830's!

CSB!

Wish they could do more to protect them. It hurts me to see historical landmarks that are deteriorating but salvageable not being 100% preserved. That would be a hell of a use for all that "war on drug" money that's being wasted.

This.

But I guess with our hurricane frequency and the fact that a few of these can only be reached by boat, there's not much incentive.

Good stuff.

Ship Island restored their fort if you want to see what one looked like in the day. Also lots of confederate prisoners buried there.

Go to Port Hudson if you want to see where some serious land battery vs navy action took place. Beautiful grounds and a nice museum.

If you are into castles and fortifications and are thinking about a trip to the Mediterranean, I would highly recommend Dubrovnik in Croatia. The place is amazing. Also they have a month-long summer festival in June (I think). My grandfather brought me when I was in my early teens.

Been to both.

I was a little tot when I visited Ship Island. Definitely didn't know the history of the "big brick building" on it.

I've always loved going to Port Hudson, and Vicksburg for the historical importance. The Mississippi River campaign is impressive.

Vicksburg got all the pub but there was some nasty fighting at Port Hudson on land and the water. Mostly Louisiana boys as you would imagine.

I've been to Fort Jackson, but just walked around the exterior, it's fenced off now, I think I read Katrina messed it up enough they stopped allowing visitors, structurally unsound. There's a museum right up the road that appears to still be open, haven't stopped yet, maybe next time I'm working down there.

I have toured Fort Pickens in Pensacola, it's very cool, they let you go almost everywhere, they even have guided tours, a gift shop, and a pretty cool museum next door.

I went to Fort Livingston on Grand Terre and many years later found out that I had a couple of greats uncle who lived there in the 1870's...what was neat about Livingston is that the walls are partially made of oyster shells...

You can explore inside Fort Jackson during orange fest in December. However there is a ton outside to look through and explore.

Fort st Phillip is only accessible by boat and is well guarded by snakes. Be careful

All are pretty cool to visit
