must be a really shitty feeling to find yourself in the water watching the cruise ship sailing off with no one knowing you fell overboard...

Assuming you even survived the fall.

Aren't cruise ships going much faster at night as well? If you fell and survived the fall...wouldn't you possibly be sucked under the boat?

Nope, had to be flags or statues to cause something like this.

I read that the majority go overboard on the last night. Half of these occur on Carnival. Also a few suicides have been from hanging. My guess is they just chickened out.

Here's a video from another incident. She was rescued and still sued. Also shows the technology exists to give a warning.

Motion sensors/cameras just above the waterline that trigger an alarm

Wouldn't help. By the time they could have stopped the ship and or turned around, she'd be dead.

No one FALLS from a cruiseship.

Pushed, yes, Jump, yes. You don't "fall" over a rail that is up to your chest.

They don't go pick you up in the big arse fricking ship. They launch a fast rescue craft and drive over and pluck you out the water.

They actually have a rapid response zodiac team. They get in the water quick. I watched one of their drills one time. They have crew that just wait on standby in case they have to deploy the zodiacs. The cruise ship may slow or stop but it won't turn around, they go to next port or land a helicopter on deck for rescue.

The odds that she survives are slim to none unfortunately.

I can only recall this one Marine who survived 36 hours in the ocean after falling from a carrier at night. His basic training survival skills saved his arse.

We were on this cruise.. Had to return to cabins for 2 hrs Friday afternoon while they conducted full ship search for her. What we heard from security was she wasn't alone when she went overboard.. No alarm was sounded when it happened. Some things aren't adding up. Interesting to see what FBI comes up with.

Often, they've received a terminal diagnosis and this is the last item on their bucket list.

I like my plan of taking a massive dose of acid, gobbling a bag of mushrooms and going skydiving without a parachute better. Much more interesting than taking a header off the back of a cruise ship.

According to articles, the ship didn't have their overboard alarm activated, which could have saved her life. Carnival is shite.
