Kind of

The sometimes terrible contractors + wasted funds from the state government is the real problem.

Tell me your civil engineering stories, reccomendations, and a scale of how hard it is. My nephew is starting at LSU in the fall in CE, trying to get him some insight...

Wasn't that difficult when you get into the actual engineering courses. The difficult ones for me were chemistry and dynamics. Moorthys classes are no fun but are required unless they brought in some other teachers for those classes. Jai tutoring was a big help on some of the classes.

New building is very nice.

Make sure he knows to get the prereqs for the senior project classes he wants. I wanted to do building design but couldn't get steel so I settled for the transportation design.

nothing can drive up the cost of a simple construction project better than a civil engineer

civil takes dynamics? I thought that's where civil and mechanical diverged

Sounds like someone is a capable replacement for McPhate, who was the dynamics weeder-outer shitty teacher back in the day.

Probably should have gone Construction Management. Much better career IMO

Its a good major and has served me well. My biggest recommendation is if he exempted out of any math do not skip the course. Take calculus from the beginning. They all build on themselves and no matter how much they thought they learned in high school take the college course. Maybe its an easy A but most likely not. They will still learn more that will be needed for future courses.

Civil is one discipline where there has been a steady need for jobs over the last 25 years and I don't see that going away anytime soon. There are a lot of jobs he can transition too out of it as well. Surveying, construction, Environmental, geotech etc...

Does Mugnier still teach surveying? The first day he would announce that he'd like the attractive girls to sit in the front row

I don't know about civil enginnering specific, but my close friend's daughter will be going into mechanical engineering starting the fall of 2023 and she has already gone to 3 schools and will be going look at LSU's school of engineering after Easter.

She will more than likely go to LSU, but I have not been inside the new engineering building, but a few weeks ago someone sent pictures from a tour they went on and the engineering school seems to be pretty impressive. That would probably be the best thing to do to learn more about the field.

Hopefully when he graduates, he can get a job with the state and work on the design of a new MSR bridge.

Pretty easy to slide on through with about a 3.3 without putting in to much work. Theres two ways to learn, either actually do your homework, or just Chegg everything and then figure it out before the test. Not much of what he learns in school will be applicable to his eventual job, so encourage him to have fun

yep. tested out of physics 1101 (or whatever the first one was), ended up having to drop the second one and re-take it.

Moorthy was a bitch for strengths and dynamics. smoked like a dragon outside of PFT. as others mentioned would cough all lecture.
Also, he knew when we would solve a problem using "Jai's way" instead of "his way", especially dynamics. So don't waste your money on Jai for that shite.

Overall it's an okay field if you want to graduate in 4 years and start making a decent wage off the bat. Chemical, Mechanical, etc are harder and require more hours.

I'm 7 years removed from graduating, have my PE, and I can say it puts food on the table and pays bills, but is kind of just a boring, Meh career. Nothing glamorous about it. Mostly following AASHTO and 10 different manuals, so when you think "designing" its not really designing your own concepts, as much as following manuals, formulas, charts, & graphs.

Depending on where you work, you will probably end up doing a bit of your own drafting plans. But that mainly consist of importing a border then drafting the linework. In our case, the road design software does a lot of the work for you. It generates the road lines, ditch lines, curve radii, 3-D features at the correct elevations, cross sections, etc.

since I hear people shite talk LSU's CE compared to UNO's (you can all correctly assume where the ones that do the shite talking went); then say all other specialties should go to LSU. But, saw this and needed to respond:
i thought the only thing UNO has going for them was their costal program?

Suresh Moorthy made me hate Civil Engineering. That man is the bane of my existence. I am glad I will never have to see that Bollywood-Frankenstein cock sucker and his fake smokers cough ever again.

Mississippi State University would be a better choice. Be a chance for them to get out and see the world.

Most of the LSU grads move to Texas.
