Cleveland - Columbus
Detroit - Ann Arbor

There are a lot that are not particularly close geographically but are in the same state:

New York City - Buffalo
Houston - Dallas
Portland - Bend
Pittsburgh - Philadelphia
Memphis - Nashville
New Orleans - Shreveport
Seattle - Spokane
San Francisco - San Diego

Let's be honest, nothing in the state is really like New Orleans.

A couple in Alabama:

Mobile vs Montgomery - one is an easy going, culturally rich (relatively speaking) interesting port city with a rich history..a mini version of New Orleans if you will. The other is an uptight, boring Old South, government dominated wasteland with little to no culture

Birmingham vs Huntsville - the first is a vibrant mid major metro area with a strong historical mixture of heavy industry along with a strong medical community that has kept it's Southern feel. The second a high tech oasis with many many transplants. Huntsville has almost a Midwestern feel to it. Feels unlike any midsized Deep South city I'be ever been to

Definitely used to be way different, but Oakland has really changed in the last couple of decades. It's just SF-lite at this point.

A fairly similar phenomenon still exists in the Seattle area with Tacoma being the Oakland to Seattle's San Francisco.

It's pretty jarring just how different the Tacoma area is compared to both Seattle to its north and Olympia to its south. Being a massive old port town, having a bunch of old farm towns like Enumclaw and Puyallup within its sphere, and being home to one of the largest American military installations in the world really sets it apart in that region.
