I thought it was bad during the mid-aughts when I lived there when Florida looked run down but at least you could buy a beer at 1 AM at a gas station.

eta: I blame Katrina. When I think about it, there's a stark difference living in BR pre and post Katrina.

They have to keep the beer cooler locked on a regular basis? I’d be finding a new place to buy beer/live.

We’re lucky we can buy alcohol at gas stations. Do you know how many states dont allow that? Some even make you go to a government operated store to buy liquor.

God Bless the LP for allowing the sale of alcohol 24/7 while there's a Baptist church every 10 miles along LA 16.

That's the kind of America I like.

Pretty sure the Shell at Lee and Highland does this every night. Once the gas station across the street closed down, all the trash crossed the street.

The CVS also gets robbed like every month of a bunch of liquor. People just load up baskets and walk out

Oh no it's always been a shithole. Pre-Katrina the apartment complex I lived in always had visitors from the shittier apartments down the street at our pool.

After Katrina the panhandling got bad. Everywhere I went if it were work, class, shopping, no matter. I was approached by the same woman with the same story on two different occasions about a week apart at two different locations.

My personal favorite was the guy stumbling into me on his way out scratching off lotto tickets at a RaceTrac. As I get to my car to leave, same guy comes up to me with the audacity to beg me for a few bucks saying how some people are down on their luck. I said dude, everyone has problems and drove off.

I walked into one at the McDonald's on Perkins near College. I walked in right after the robbers left but didn't see shite. I was in there for 10 seconds before I knew why everyone was acting so weird. It was surreal.

eta: no no no, this one was better:

I go out to get a few things at a grocery store and I'm wearing the old grey windbreaker style US Army physical fitness jacket. I still have it, makes for a nice light jacket. So this guy comes up to me and starts making banter about how he first needs money of course but then says he's too old to join up. One of those "oh yeah bro I almost joined up". Sure pal, sure.

Before this time, I remember an old Army buddy who was still in and now a senior NCO pissed about the lowered recruiting standards. Including letting those older than 40 in as initial entry recruits. I don't remember exactly but at the time but I do recall my friend not being happy about it amongst other things.

I do recall informing the gentlemen the Army's change in policy and he should hit up the recruiting office. I believe it was on Siegen if I remember correctly. He didn't have a response for that.

Just go to BQuik.

You’ll have to take out a second mortgage to afford it though
