Went to the doctor this morning. Told me to lose 20 lbs.

Told him I haven’t exercised since early 2020

He told me my priorities were fricked up

I love doctors

It is indeed a sad trend to see that our country has turned its back on our awesome God. We as a country need to turn back to realizing that God has blessed our country. Let's please pray for revival in our country and putting the Lord first and ask for forgiveness for what we've let happen. Otherwise, the future of our children and grandchildren will be doomed.

Good. Fewer non Christians in the churches is a good thing.

Nearly everyone was some kind of mainline Protestant in the 50s. It didn’t make them Christians and it didn’t do many favors for the church universal. Perhaps more harm than good...

Hebrews 10:23-25

quote:

23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;)
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

I can’t help but wonder if the explosion in isolation and mental illness and anxiety of our youth isn’t correlated with a decline in membership in churches, after school clubs, etc

I am not even talking about religion. Churches are, when you boil it all down, just another societal organization.

I don’t want to see a decline in these kinds of things without a guarantee that kids and adults are replacing it with other forms of contact and relationship.

Exactly. I didn’t like going to church as a kid but I was still active in multiple after school events, softball teams, youth groups (which had bus trips to San Antonio, Kingfish hockey games, etc). Made a lot of friends and definitely helped guide me though some of the tougher parts of junior high and early high school.

I haven’t continued going to church regularly as an adult, but now with a kid I see the benefit of starting again. The last few times I’ve been it’s shocking just how old the population inside are. There are so many churches when you really look, some might have to start consolidating down. Going to be interesting to see what happens to that real estate

We've been a secularized society for a long time. For many, church was more of a social club than a religion. Social media gives people a social club that they don't need church for. Align the takeoff of social media with that chart.

But along the way, I’ve found more faith in science than I do with the church.

How does science teach you how to treat other people? And how can you teach that to kids?

"Science" is all over the place in terms of behavioral studies.

I understand many on this board are agnostic and frown upon religion, but even IF the whole religion thing is nonsense, it’s not at all clear that the alternative is better.

I’m not religious but agree with this. We’ve currently chosen narcissism, consumerism, hedonism, and victim hood as alternatives. It’s not working out well.

People need to hear the word of God and realize how relevant it is in our daily lives. This Sunday we celebrate a risen Savior and I think everyone should be at church for this celebration.

This would be the counter to my argument and it is a good and valid point.

You don't need church to be a good person and if church is the only thing keeping you from being some violent Neanderthal then maybe you're just not a good person

A more concerning statistic would be those considering themselves “Christian” vs something else. Defining Christian as a personal belief and not “my dad was a deacon/elder in xyz Protestant church growing up, or I went to Catholic school”. I’m sure the numbers would be equally staggering, if not more so.

Not in an immediate context you don’t, but you can’t discount the impact of two to three thousand years of the Judeo Christian tradition on the Western World—an overwhelming positive.

You’re insinuating that I don’t know how to treat people. You’re also insinuating that I’m teaching my kids to be disrespectful and treat others like shite.

Is that what you’re saying?

My two kids have been to church once or twice. Ones 11 and one is 8. Both of them have VERY soft hearts and treat people and animals as well as kids can.

There goes your theory.
