Because they're getting paid $8-$10 per hour. Who cares? The only person I talk to in a grocery store or anywhere I shop is the cashier when I'm checking out. I know that the employees there aren't paid enough to care so I don't bother with seeking assistance anywhere on the floor.
Blame the lack of quality pay not quality employees. These businesses pay a part-time rate and expect their employees to bend over backwards.
Yeah who cares about anything anymore? That’s the right attitude to have.

You have a significant other that works during the holiday season. You claim it is beneath her to to work at wal-mart. You state that low levels of socioeconomic individuals frequent this establishment. There appears to be a people with the buildings thermostat as people claim to have higher temperatures than expected. There have been racial claims at said establishment and used diapers scattered in the process.
You lastly state that society is worsening

Well the business expects a level of customer service because the customer expects that.
Might as well just have machines and card board cut outs. Then every will just be in the governments part time wage.

30% of their pay goes to the government and 40% of the business profits go to the government. Blame the government.

Retail is making a comeback. "Customers" love to complain. You can't bitch, moan, steal, return things easily online.

Retail stores are getting trashier. Nobody with any self-respect shops in person unless they absolutely have to.
There are still those of us who would rather pick out the exact merchandise we want, put in our carts and vehicles, and unload it ourselves than trust a high school drop out making minimum wage while spending half of his time staring at his cell phone doing it for us.

Or someone who has never stood in line waiting to buy a cell phone behind some woman telling the electronics associate that she needs a phone for international calls because her boyfriend lives in Iowa.

Our society is getting trashier.
There's no denying this. When I was a kid and my family went shopping if I picked up something on the shelf that my parents were not going to buy for me my father would tell me to put that back where I got it and if I put it back anywhere else other than exactly where I picked it up from it would take him less than a quarter of a second to tell me "That's not where you got that." Now half the time parents that take their kids shopping are too busy farting around on Iphone displays to even know where their kids are, never mind what they are doing. I haven't even got around to society's complete rejection of the "it's not yours until you pay for it so don't treat it like it is yours until you pay for it" (i.e. don't take it out of the box, don't destroy the box or packaging if you do not intend on buying it, etc.) doctrine that was the norm when I was growing up.
