In general, companies who pay annual bonuses don't pay high enough salaries. I do the same job as a relative. We work for competitor companies. After a conversation last Christmas he asked what my bonus was. $0. He laughed about it. He got about $15k he said which was the highest he ever got. One year he didn't get one at all. Well after talking I found out that I made $25k more than him annually before bonuses. And my benefits were a lot better.
So bonuses are great but if your company can afford to do that, they aren't paying employees enough. Small companies may be the exception.

My weekly sales bonus is usually higher than my christmas bonus and I am ok with that

Usually $200-300, but there was one year they didn't give one at all. And this year there were some financial problems, from what I hear.

I blame bottom-tier AT&T Internet for this second post.

True in general. I'll add that I pay mine higher at every position than any other office in the area. And no skimping on benefits. BCBS paid at 100%, profit sharing, quarterly performance bonuses-these are not guaranteed, free healthcare, pharmacy products free or at cost, lunch provided everyday, free drinks of employees choice(non-alcoholic), use of my vacation homes and many other perks. So not all employers that give bonuses short the employees. Our bonuses are just that. People tend to do better with incentives.

I'm self-employed .I take 15-20 days off to recharge. That's my self-gift. My main vendor sends me and the wife on a 5 star trip every year, but it's in Summer. I think of that as my Christmas gift.

Take from it what you will. Huge tool? At times. POS boss? Only if you're a worthless slackass.

15% of salary if the company hits financial targets. Things were looking good at 3Q. But the price of oil could make things interesting for 4Q

A sick/bonus check the first week of December. Everyone starts out with 48 hours regular pay...every time you call in sick during the year, 8 hours are deducted. You call in sick 6 days or more during the year you get nothing. Wife usually gets about $500 for teaching in Bossier.
I've gotten the full 48 hours 17 years running.

Good idea. Have to remember that.

That's a shitty deal. My health shouldn't determine a bonus. My performance should.

It's a shitty deal that your employer has to pay you for time you don't work just because you didn't feel well. Sick days are ABUSED. I would use that as a whole separate bonus personally.

Nice incentive to get people to show up for work. Those who are gonna call in sick...will do so anyways, but it's nice to reward those who you can depend on no matter what. Our company has over 5,500 employees system wide(one of the largest healthcare providers in La.).

It's not called a Christmas bonus at all, just the timing of when those checks are dispersed...comes in handy this time of the year.
