Abstinence education is a giant failure...yet the christian right continues to tout it...
From Darth Vader's post with his comment and question:
quote:
Looks like over the past two decades the Chlamydia rates have doubled overall in the US.
The question here, is if this school's "abstinence only" sex ed is to blame for the rates seen at that school, what is to blame for the doubling of this STD in the rest of the US?
Your headline for this story seems to be, Massive epidemic of chlamydia in Texas high school. Christian right's hypocrisy on display in giant failure of abstinence based sex education-details at 10:00. I wonder if you have the same low opinion (and, if I may express my opinion, evident glee) in the apparent failings of more secular/progressive sex education policies?
quote:
I have ZERO doubt the majority of those who came down with this after fricking identify as Christian. Hell I have ZERO doubt that they go to church each sunday.
This is foolish and irrelevant. If practiced, abstinence will prevent STDs whether or not the teen identifies as a Christian or not or whether they go to church every Sunday or not. As the diseases are egalitarian, so too is abstinence.
The point here is not, or should not be, I hate Christianity, the Christian right are hypocrites, abstinence sucks- see I told you so, but why are school based sexual education methods failing and why are so many teens making poor choices with such grave consequences?

why are school based sexual education methods ailing
It's not a binary system. The options aren't just "abstinence only" or "comprehensive." When I was in high school we had two health teachers in the school, one taught sex ed and the other ignored the subject completely. We had half the school getting nothing, not even "abstinence is the only 100% effective way of preventing pregnancy and STDs," education. So that chart would reprepresent a general nation wide failure of all sex ed. Not just school based abstinence only or comprehensive, but from parents as well.

Because they're teenagers. Their brains aren't fully formed and are addled by hormones. Nothing new there.

Both points well made and taken. And sad. I would be curious to see statistics if the various methods and non-methods could be broken out. Even that would be limited with a wide variety of intervening socio-economic factors blurring lines. It's a horrible disheartening problem for these kids.

Sorry about bringing a thread "back from the dead," but I was also curious if 20 out of 300 students should be considered an epidemic. In turn, using Darth's second graph, I used a likelihood ratio to see if the processes underlying the outbreak at this school were similar to that of the United States.
To do so, I used binomial distributions and the equation:
L(Pschool | Data) / L(Punitedstates | Data)
I found that the processes underlying the outbreak at the school are 3.4 * 10^16 times different than those underlying the spread of chlamydia in the United States.
In sum, I believe this is considered an epidemic because the spread of the disease is so much faster at this school (3.4 * 10^16x faster) than in the US. However, I am sure that we could all come up with reasons why the disease would travel faster through the school than the US.

Laugh all you want. My sons aren't running around out there looking for some girl who will be intimate with anyone willing.
I find it sad that information like that is so shocking.

Every parent every where thinks their son is "a good boy". The more taboo you make something the more kids want to line up and try it. Yours is no different. But by all means continue to be naive.

They should just promote masturbation, lots and lots of masturbation.

Jesus Christ. The fricking Superintendent used "ain't" in an interview? Or EVER, for that matter.

They might not have had sex yet, but they sure as hell are looking to.

Many adults are uncomfortable with the idea of teen sexuality, and prefer to remain in ignorance or denial. But in the United States, 46 percent of all high school age students, and 62 percent of high school seniors, have had sexual intercourse; almost nine million teens have already had sex.1,2 It is critically important for adults to address adolescent sexuality realistically and to recognize that many factors, including socioeconomic status, race or ethnicity, family structure, educational aspirations, and life experiences, affect young people's behavior.

62 percent of high school seniors, which is a decent majority, and it's not like the other 38% of them aren't trying to get laid, there's just a ton of awkward pandas out there too.

Thus the reason why people like Iowa Tiger amuse me...parents ALWAYS think their kid is the only one who isn't doing something. The numbers dont lie.
I only hope he is smart enough to sit down and talk to his kids about safe sex before he ends up a grand parent.

So your position is 100% of high school kids are out there trying to have sex? That is dumb. Is the majority? Yes, but there are teenagers and adults out there that understand what an ordered sexual desire looks like and practice self control...
